Hollywood star Kevin Costner has been hitting the headlines this year due to his highly publicised divorce from his wife Christine Baumgartner.

However, the Oscar-winning actor and director is probably better known for his extensive career dating back to the 1980s.

Along with his Academy Awards, Costner has also bagged a trio of Golden Globes and an Emmy.

One of Costner’s biggest roles to date was in The Bodyguard, which saw him playing a security detail and former intelligence officer Frank Farmer who falls in love with the pop star Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston), whom he’d been charged to keep safe.

The 1992 movie spawned a wildly successful musical which is now embarking on its UK tour.

To mark The Bodyguard Musical starting, here’s a look at some of Costner’s most successful projects to date.

The Bodyguard – 1992

The Bodyguard not only told a dramatic love story but featured a hit soundtrack to match with the blockbuster movie drawing in an estimated £335million ($411million) at the box office.

Costner also hoped to make a sequel with Princess Diana before her death.

Yellowstone – 2018

Taylor Sheridan’s epic neo-western series Yellowstone, which Costner also serves as an executive producer in, has brought him to a new generation of fans.

In the Paramount Plus series, Costner plays a ruthless ranch owner and patriarch John Dutton who will do anything he can to keep hold of his lands.

Dances with Wolves – 1990

Frontier drama dances With Wolves saw Costner in front and behind the camera in a sweeping and moving tale about an American solider who becomes part of a Native American tribe.

The movie currently has an 87 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was Costner’s directorial debut with a total of seven Oscar wins including Best Picture.

The Untouchables – 1987

The American gangster movie was Costner’s big breakout role with the rising star at the time playing federal agent Eliot Ness, who is trying to take down gangster Al Capone.

The film was loosely based on real-life events but was mainly fictionalised.

Field of Dreams – 1989

Fantasy drama Field of Dreams saw Costner playing a farmer who builds a full-size pitch on his land, attracting the ghosts of baseball past.

The film ended up getting three Oscar nods and also starred Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves – 1991

Hollywood’s take on Robin Hood was another hit for Costner albeit with the English figure having a decidedly American accent.

The film recounted the adventures of Robin of Locksley as he fought against the impoverished peasants of his former lands.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starred Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman and Christian Slater with the movie soundtracked by another classic 1990s ballad: Bryan Adams’ (Everything I Do) I Do It for You.

JFK – 1991

Another classic from the 1990s was JFK, a political thriller focusing on the investigation into the assassination of the American president in 1963.

Costner portrayed Jim Garrison, the New Orleans district attorney looking into the killing and the conspiracy theories surrounding the death.

Mr Brooks – 2007

A more recent hit for Costner was the dark suburban thriller Mr Brooks in which the Hollywood actor played the sinister titular serial killer.

The role was something of a gear change for Costner, who is more known for his heroic parts but proved a compelling watch.
