Gardeners World star Monty Don shares sad change after addressing show future

Gardeners’ World star Monty Don has shared an update about the “dramatic” but “sad” change to his garden after telling fans a big change was “in progress”. In his latest post, the 68-year-old shared a picture of his stripped down garden after removing his neat display of box hedges.

Monty, 68, captioned the post: “Dramatic, shocking, sad but rich with potential.” The change so far has prompted many of his 1.8 million followers to share their thoughts, as one wrote: “Whatever you do, Monty, it will be beautiful.”

A second added: “Looks very different, but it’s a great space to work with, I look forward to seeing what you do with it! xx.” A third typed: “It’s going to be even better. New opportunities are exciting!”

Another commented: “I don’t get the whole obsession with box hedges. – I mean I do understand that it nostalgic, cultural etc. But they really are rather boring and dated from my perspective. Great you’re going to change this.”

On Monday, the horticulturalist also shared a picture of his blighted box plants waiting to be burned as part of his garden transformation. He revealed that while seeing them go was “very sad”, it also meant “new ideas” and “new possibilities”.

“Nothing ever stays the same in a garden,” he added. Monty also surprised fans this week with a picture of cut down trees piled on top of each other as he teased: “Big changes underway.” His latest Instagram posts come after he addressed his future career plans and how he may need to scale back on his schedule when he approaches 70.

Speaking on Times Radio, the gardener said: “I’m contracted for another year anyway, if they offered me a bit more than that, I might well take that. But the serious point is, I will be 70 in two years time.

“I want to go on, I like making television programmes, I like writing books. To have the energy to do that, and to not scrabble, there’s always that sense of scrabbling, I think I have to give something up. So therefore the logical thing to give up is Gardeners’ World.”

Monty joined the show back in 2003 replacing Alan Titchmarsh. During an interview alongside the former host in 2017, the presenter discovered that it was in fact Alan who had recommended him to producers for the job. Speaking on the show’s magazine YouTube channel, he spilled: “Stepping into your footsteps was clearly a big thing.

“But you have to – and I’m sure goodness gracious it was worst for you under those circumstances with Geoff [who died in 1996] – you have to own it after a bit, you can’t cringe under the shadow of your predecessor, however lovely and revered they were. You have to, quite early on, say, ‘I’m doing this’.”

Alan went on to say producers asked him who he would like to see take over the show, to which he replied: “I said, ‘You need someone who can chair a meeting, you need an anchorman’ – this is absolutely true – ‘You need an anchorman and I think your best bet is Monty Don’.”

Stunned by the revelation, Monty replied: “Did you? That’s the first time [he knew].” He went on to say: “Well, I am very glad to hear that, thank you.”
