Mrs Brown’s Boys is returning to BBC One for its first full series in ten years next month – leaving fans delighted.
The hit comedy, created by Brendan O'Carroll, is set to make its long-awaited return with a mini-series consisting of four episodes. There have been Christmas specials of Mrs Brown’s Boys over the past decade but next month’s run of shows will be its first season since 2013.
The network has confirmed that four episodes will be shown, starting on Friday 8 September at 9.30pm. The episodes will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Earlier this year, Brendan – who also stars as matriarch Agnes Brown – revealed the show had been 'thwarted twice' due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was originally scheduled to hit screens in 2021.
The 67-year-old comic said: “This mini-series was actually planned for 2021.Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post-Covid shortage of studios, it's fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen.
“Fasten your seatbelts and hold on to your hats!”
BBC chiefs have also described their delight at the show’s return. Josh Cole, head of comedy at BBC Studios, and Steven Canny, executive producer, said: “There's no one quite like Mrs Brown.
“An absolute force of outrageous wit and slapstick that has audiences hooked and belly laughing. It's great to be back.”
Jon Petrie, director of comedy, added: “BBC Comedy are pleased to announce that after a decade since the last full series of Mrs Brown's Boys, millions of viewers around the UK will be thrilled to hear that Brendan is bringing Agnes and the family back together for a brand-new mini-series of his award-winning show.”
Fans of the show – which follows the life of Dublin matriarch Agnes, her family and friends – have taken to Twitter to express their joy at its return – with one describing the news as “brilliant” and another adding they “can’t wait”.
However, the comedy does divide opinion – with others less happy to learn of the new series.
The show’s Christmas special left BBC viewers raging – with some claiming it had ruined the festive period. Only 2.4million watched the Christmas episode, titled Shining Mammy, which featured daughter Cathy and her creepy boyfriend, who Agnes' friend thinks might be a vampire.
One Twitter user said: “Mrs Brown's Boys has gone beyond being stupid, it's now unwatchable, not funny in the slightest, turned off after 13 minutes.” Another wrote: “Mrs Brown's Boys has arrived to ruin Christmas again.”
A third said: “Christmas has just been ruined as I caught a bit of Mrs Brown's Boys because the batteries in my TV remote died.”
Meanwhile, the show’s creator Brendan once told how the BBC tried to censor the show so it could be moved to an earlier, prime-time slot.
