Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek Draper is “not doing great" in a heartbreaking update on his health.
The 56 year old is battling long Covid after contracting the virus in 2020 and spent 10 weeks in an induced coma.
He was finally discharged from the hospital in 2021 on a trial basis, but he has since been readmitted on several occasions for a number of health issues, including brain inflammation and liver damage.
While he is at home, Good Morning Britain host Kate cares for her husband and their two young children, Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14.
Kate was in attendance at the annual Pride of Britain awards on Sunday, 8 October, and speaking to the Metro, she gave an update on Derek, revealing: “He’s not doing great, to be honest. But the battle goes on.”
The 56 year old also confirmed that she has managed to get a meeting in the diary with politician Steve Barclay after her recent emotional plea to him during a live interview on GMB.
In the interview, Kate explained: “I’d like to come and talk to you – not about Derek by the way, this is not me trying to get something for him.”
She tearfully continued: “This is about representing millions of people across the country who, like me, in one hand feel like they’re holding the life of their loved one and in the other hand punching away at a system, and it isn’t about money.”
In another recent interview, Kate confirmed that Derek now needs round the clock care on the ground floor of their London home.
She told Good Housekeeping : “I'd love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze.”
Kate continued: “But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us.”
Derek and Kate tied the knot in 2005, and they are proud parents to their two children, who Kate has praised on several occasions for the way they have handled what has happened to their father.
She has said that they have handled it “brilliantly,” and they have readjusted to their new way of living following Derek’s decline.
