Grand Designs Kevin McCloud pays tribute as two stars die during filming

Kevin McCloud details which Grand Designs home he’d live in

Kevin McCloud has opened up about the tragic death of two Grand Designs stars which happened during filming for the Channel 4 series.

In a new interview, Kevin discussed the heartbreaking loss of one guest and explained that “personal issues” had come up several times when filming their episodes.

Speaking ahead of the episode, which is yet to air, Kevin said: “We are doing a very difficult project right now.

“We had no idea and neither did our contributors, but the husband fell gravely ill and passed away during the filming process, and it makes the narrative very hard to graft. Because you think where do we go [from here]?”

The Channel 4 presenter went on to detail the death of another Grand Designs star, Nat McBride, who died before he got to complete his project.

Nat died of stomach cancer during filming for an episode of Grand Designs. It meant his wife Lucie Fairweather had to finish the project alone.

Kevin said Nat, who was a sustainability campaigner, and Lucie, a teacher, were going to build a chalet bungalow with amazing architecture.

“On day one he announces on camera that he’s got stomach cancer,” he told New Zealand publication Stuff.

“He passed away six months later, and we had one day’s filming in the can. And then 18 months later, Lucy rang up and said, ‘I’m going to do this by myself’, with her two children.”

Kevin added: “She did it with architect Gerry Tate, who held her hand through the process, guided her through it.

“Sometimes you don’t know where [a situation] will go, and it can turn such a positive corner.”

Since Grand Designs started in 1999, Kevin has seen some interesting renovations take place.

Speaking in a previous interview with Express.co.uk, he said: “The big stand-out moments are always the privileged experiences of meeting remarkable people and gawping at extraordinary architecture.

“I’ve interviewed Prince Philip (a passionate advocate of modern design), Richard Rogers, Damien Hirst, Sir Bernard Lovell (look him up!), politicians and potentates.

“But the memorable interviews are often with ordinary people who, in their own words, are ‘doing an extraordinary thing.'”

He continued: “Any well-designed finished house in whatever setting, suburban, grimy urban or bucolic rural, is a huge pleasure when it’s finished.

“Though I have to say that the stand-out projects are those where the people shine with resilience, often through great hardship or illness.”

Grand Designs is available to watch on All4.
