Shaun Ryder interview was ‘really awkward’ on BBC Breakfast say viewers
BBC Breakfast viewers were not impressed by presenters Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell’s efforts to interview Happy Monday’s frontman Shaun Ryder on Monday mornings show.
The music icon, who broke through as part of the “Madchester” scene in the late 80s, spoke about a wealth of topics on the show.
Although ostensibly on the programme to talk about his upcoming tours with Happy Mondays and Black Grape, the star, who has also appeared on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, discussed his alopecia, his music, his time in the jungle, his love of a quiet life and his family during the interview.
However, viewers didn’t feel that the presenters were properly engaged claiming they “had no clue what to do with him”.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, they made their feelings known.

@AlbertEdmunds10 quipped: “#BBCBreakfast Safe to say, I don’t think Shaun’s melon was twisted today….” (sic)
@SultanaBhatti1 opined: “What a terrible #BBCBreakfast interview with Shaun Ryder, like pulling teeth. Presenters had no clue what to do with him.”
@chemalino shared this sentiment saying: “These two on #BBCBreakfast have just spent 10 mins astonished that a 60 yr old man doesn’t ‘go out and party’ anymore. I half-wished Shaun Ryder resorted to time and told them both to ‘F*** Off!’.” (sic)
@LeePartridge16 chimed in: “These two BBC presenters don’t know how to interview the great Shaun Ryder. #BBCBreakfast.”
Meanwhile a user with the handle @Syrupie said: “#BBCBreakfast This interview with Shaun Ryder is hard work and cringe.”

Despite their issues with the interivew viewers were loving Shaun. @WayneSmithUK71 said: “Shaun Ryder is a class act, he’s such a character #BBCBreakfast.”
@CKurkova agreed writing: “Shaun Ryder is so funny #BBCBreakfast.” Another social media user @stevebristoluk simply wrote: “Shaun Ryder the legend. #BBCBreakfast.”
Ironically, given the criticism, Sarah is actually a fan of Shaun’s and took to her Instagram following the show to post a picture of herself and co-presenter Jon with the indie legend for her 1,075 followers.
“Happy Mondays provided the soundtrack to my A levels (showing my age!!!). Now swapping DJ’ing for Q&A’s…advocate of an early night…none other than Shaun Ryder. Not quite the chat I expected with @jonkay01 @bbcbreakfast,” she wrote in her caption. (sic)
BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One daily from 6am.
