Celine Dion cancels Summer 2023 shows after rare diagnosis
Celine Dion’s sister has opened up about the harsh reality of the singer’s Stiff-person syndrome which they “know so little” about.
The 55-year-old singer announced she was suffering from the condition, which affects one in a million worldwide, back in December 2022.
In a new update, Claudette Dion, 74, hailed her sister as “strong woman” who is “doing everything to recover”.
Such symptoms of the syndrome are spasms, which Celine’s sister said are “impossible to control”.
She added to Hello! Magazine: “You know who people often jump up in the night because of a cramp in the leg or the calf? It’s a bit like that, but in all muscles.

“There’s little we can do to support her, to alleviate her pain.”
Celine previously told fans how her neurological condition had made it difficult for her to walk and sing.
Since then, she has cancelled plans for her Courage world tour, until she’s ready to be back on the stage.
The My Heart Will Go On hitmaker is currently relying on a “great team of doctors” and a sports-medicine therapy to build her strength back up.
Claudette added it was also “comforting” to know that family members were living near the singer to help.

Additionally, Celine’s sister revealed that their other sibling Linda had been caring for her as they work closely with researchers who specialise in the condition.
Speaking to Le Journal de Montreal last month, she added: “We can’t find drugs, but to give hope, I think it’s important.”
Claudette reassured fans that Celine is working hard on getting better but believes she “mostly needs to rest”.
She added: “She always goes above and beyond [when performing], she always tries to be the best and top of her game.”
In an emotional post back in May, the singer announced she had no choice but to cancel all of her stage commitments until further notice.
She wrote: “All I know is singing, it’s what I’ve done all my life and it’s what I love to do the most.
“I miss you so much. I miss seeing all of you being on the stage performing for you.
“I always give 100 per cent when I do my show but my condition is now allowing me to give you that right now.”
According to Mayo Clinic, Stiff Person Syndrome is a rare disorder of motor function characterised by involuntary stiffness of axial muscles and superimposed painful muscle spasms, which are often induced by startle or emotional stimuli.
The disorder affects one in a million worldwide and there is currently no cure.
