Great Britain’s Josh Kerr is taking home gold in the 1500 metres at the Athletics World Championships and no doubt would have been cheered on by his fiancée from the sidelines.

The Scottish middle-distance runner, 25 stunned Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who was the favourite to win, and took the 1500m title in style at the Athletics World Championships in Budapest today (Wednesday, 23 August).

Josh clocked three minutes 29.38 seconds to win a massive battle with Jakob, who came second, over the final 300m.

He emulated Jake Wightman’s win in Eugene last year, with Jake missing through injury this year, to deny Norway’s Jakob – who also had to settle for silver in 2022 – the world crown again.

As he celebrates his triumphant win we took a closer look at his life off the track, from his home life with his stunning fiancée to his running ritual…

Scotland to US move

The 25 year old who hails from Edinburgh, Scotland began running when he was eight years old having joined Edinburgh Athletics Club.

Pursuing his athletics dreams he left home at 17 and moved to the US to attend the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque.

In 2018, he broke the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) 1500m record and went on to become a professional athlete and joined the Brooks Beasts athletics club.

Stunning fiancée

If he's not competing on the track or training for his next major event, Josh is likely to be spending time with his fiancée Larimar Rodriguez.

While his Instagram is dedicated to his sport, in December 2021 he shared the exciting news that he had proposed to Larimar with two sweet photos of the pair.

He lovingly wrote the caption: "I couldn’t wait any longer, I’m so excited for our future", alongside a heart and ring emoji.

Signature shades

Fans of Josh will have noticed he's often always donning a pair of shades while competing on the track, partly due to being sponsored by the sunglasses brand Oakley.

During the World Championships in Budapest, he's been sporting red-framed sunglasses, but for the final could be seen taking gold in a fresh pair of shades.

Talking about running in sunglasses he told The Telegraph: "I was a bit apprehensive initially… but it makes me very laser focused, because nobody can see my eyes, especially in the [pre-race] call-room.

"It’s fantastic. Someone was [once] swearing at me, 'Are you looking at me?' and I was like, 'I’m not sure, mate, you don’t know where my eyes are looking'. It’s a very intimidating thing for people. So it’s a nice little thing up my sleeve. I’ve got the gold ones for the final, so they will be looking cool."

Mindfulness and meditation

Preparing for one of your biggest races of the year can surely be daunting and so it's useful for Josh to practice mindfulness and meditation techniques to help him along the way.

Josh told Runner's World US: "It’s so important to not psych yourself out of these big moments.

"I’ve got some deep weaknesses in my mind that we’re working on."

He went on to add: "Having positive memories and words that I have ready for when these negative thoughts come into my head always helps combat the scary moments".

Only male GB track medallist

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, British men competed in 26 track and road running events, from the speedy 100m sprint to the gruelling marathon.

But by the end of the Games, Josh was the only male athlete to return home with a medal in his luggage.

Josh who ran 3:29.05 secured an Olympic bronze in the 1500m, impressive.

Brother is a professional rugby player

It seems the talents run in the family as his older brother, Jake Kerr plays rugby for Bristol Bears in the Premiership.

Both brothers accredit their success to their supportive parents, dad John who is a former professional rugby player and their mum, Jill who runs a successful physiotherapy practice in Morningside.

Josh told The Times: "I was told I was going to be Olympic champion. And my brother was not told he was going to play for Scotland, he was going to play for the Lions. We have some ways to go but why put your life into something if you don’t want to be the best?".
