It’s a budding, and somewhat chaotic, relationship that is capturing the attention of The Archers fans, but actress Daisy Badger reckons the ongoing lesbian romance between her alter-ego Pip Archer and Stella Pryor is long overdue.

Pip has been thrown into a tailspin as she addresses her sexuality, with Stella being mercifully patient as her love interest decides where her heart lies.

It is the first lesbian relationship in the history in the radio show, which holds the record for the longest running soap in the world, having been on the airwaves since 1951.

Daisy, alongside former EastEnders and The Bill actress Lucy Speed, who plays Stella, couldn’t be happier to be involved in the story arc.

‘It’s really nice,’ she shared. ‘It’s just about the connection between her and Stella. It should have happened sooner!’

Enthusing that it is ‘exciting’, Lucy, best known as Walford’s Natalie Evans, added to Radio Times: ‘I have an 11-year-old daughter and what I’ve noticed is that young people are in this lovely space where they’re allowed to choose and be free, and learn about their sexuality.

‘That’s something I really embrace. What I’ve enjoyed about this storyline is that it hasn’t been a big coming out.’

What it has been is complex, particularly as Pip has until now only had relationships with men, namely her most recent ex Toby Fairbrother, with whom she shares daughter Rosie.

With Stella grieving for her lost dog, the two women shared a heart to heart in a red wine haze, with Pip then pulling back and fleeing the situation.

Stella has been understanding and assured Pip that these things happen, but it’s becoming clear that Pip doesn’t agree.

And now it is confirmed that there is a future ahead for the couple-to-be.

‘It seems obvious and normal, the stuff that’s been happening between Pip and Stella,’ Daisy reflected. ‘Nobody is trying too hard with it.’

Lucy agreed, saying: ‘Stella is grown-up enough to say to herself, “Look, don’t overthink it and just go with it.”

‘But also, I think she’s had same-sex relationships in the past. As a female, you reach a certain stage in life where you go, “Everything can change.”’

The path to love never runs smooth in the world of soap, so the road is bound to be a bumpy one.

As for what the future holds, this remains a closely guarded secret.

Many listeners however are hoping that the first lesbian relationship in the Archers can be a successful one.
