She’s a menacing Lioness on the pitch but off it Lucy Bronze spends her time on a more low-key, intricate hobby – she is building the Spongebob cast out of Lego.

The star defender has revealed that she has winding down between World Cup matches by making the Nickelodeon character and his friends, Sandy, Patrick, and Plankton while in Australia.

Ms Bronze said: ‘Not to blow my own trumpet but it is quite impressive.

‘I started building all the characters. We’ve got Spongebob, Sandy, Patrick, and Plankton. Mr Krab, he’s the best one. And I made Spongebob’s pineapple and inside it, it’s got his bed and Gary the Snail.

‘And I’m not going to lie, I’m quite impressed.’

Focused: The Lioness, 31, assembles her team of characters

Ms Bronze, who plays for Barcelona, shared a picture of Spongebob and his friends on the England team’s Instagram page where she was given huge compliments by fans.

Meanwhile, Ella Toone revealed that the Lionesses celebrated on their win over Australia by having chips and gravy for dinner – because most of them are northern.

But before that Ms Bronze was ticked off by manager Sarina Weigman during the team’s dressing room celebrations following their win over Australia on Wednesday.

As is tradition, the players returned to the changing rooms after their win to dance and sing their victory song, Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

But when Ms Bronze went to join in, Ms Weigman told her: ‘You’re not allowed to jump, you have to rest your legs for the next game.’

Ms Bronze also candidly spoke of how she struggles with her high level of competitiveness.

She said: ‘I hate losing more than I like winning. I work as hard as other people around me but I also have this intense competitive streak, it’s my DNA and how I’m built.’

Speaking on Wednesday’s win, Ms Bronze added: ‘It was surreal perhaps more for myself and Alex Greenwood than anybody – we hugged each other and said we finally did it.

‘We were both there in Canada in 2015 when we lost to America and in 2019 again and we lost out so narrowly, that was one of my biggest heartbreaks in football.’
