Based on Dame Agatha’s most successful novel – the biggest-selling crime thriller of all time – it is set on an island where 10 people are invited by a mysterious host to assemble for a party only to find themselves knocked off one by one for unpunished crimes.

The excellent set suggests the architectural elegance of the 1930s, including the black marble floor and a bearskin rug.

It is a thoroughly enjoyable romp through a hand-picked selection of characters ranging from the irritable to the despicable, including a pair of female domestics who appear to have a lesbian relationship (Nicola May-Taylor and Lucy Tregear), a Bible-bashing old biddy (Emily Brent), a former policeman-turned-private eye (Andrew Lancel) and a hanging judge (David Yelland).

Christie’s disdain for the police comes across loud and clear, and the shocking finale makes no concession to cosy resolutions.

Miss Marple, it ain’t.
