GBBO contestants are asked to make a famous bake

The Great British Bake Off viewers were loving tonight’s technical challenge which saw contestants make a cake without mentioning any of the names it is popularly known by.

Before revealing what they would be baking, judge Paul Hollywood said: “You’ll all know this for sure. It’s a very, very famous bake.”

When Paul and fellow judge Preu Leith departed, hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond revealed that they would be making a chocolate caterpillar cake.

The cakes were supposed to consist of a light sponge filled with chocolate meringue buttercream and coated in a silky ganache with chocolate and meringue features to give the caterpillar look.

While the creations received mixed reactions from judges, ranging from “this is a bit of a mess” to criticism that one of the cakes was too small and had more buttercream than sponge, the viewers couldn’t help but laugh at how careful they were not to mention any brand names.

It reminded some of the famous battle of the caterpillar cakes in 2021, which saw Marks & Spencer, who make the iconic Colin the Caterpillar cake, calling in the lawyers over ALDI’s rival chocolate sponge roll, Cuthbert. The two firms later reached an agreement.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter @cceg63 said: “It’s giving M&S v ALDI caterpillar cake gate.”

Someone with the handle @meledgerwood chimed in: “I can’t wait to watch everyone dance around the fact they can’t actually give the cake its proper name.”

Meanwhile, @Atkins_Sam questioned: “I need to know how many times the bakers called it ‘Colin The Caterpillar’ and how many times they had to edit it out.”

Another fan called @scottyjotty couldn’t fathom why you’d want to make the popular cake from scratch.
