Who was Texas school shooting victim Amerie Jo Garza?

NINETEEN kids were among the victims of a school shooting in Texas that has been described as one of the deadliest in US history.

Among the deceased was ten-year-old Amerie Jo Garza who bravery tried to dial 911 as her class was confronted by gunman Salvador Ramos.

Who was Amerie Jo Garza?

Amerie Jo was gunned down when a shooter entered the school at approximately 11.32am local time on May 24, 2022.

In the days after the tragedy, her grandmother, Berlinda Irene Arreola, described her granddaughter as a “smart” kid who had just received an award for the A-B Honor Roll.

“She was very smart and she was looking forward to making a life for herself,” she told The Daily Beast.

“She was super-outgoing. She had a generous heart. She was always there to lend anybody a helping hand. She was very quick to be a teacher’s pet.”

Did Amerie Jo Garza call 911 during the shooting?

Ms Arreola revealed that Amerie had bravely picked up the phone and attempted to call police as 18-year-old Ramos entered the classroom and reportedly yelled “you’re going to die."

She told the outlet “So the gunman went in and he told the children, ‘you’re going to die.’ And Amerie had her phone and she called 911.

“Instead of grabbing it and breaking it or taking it from her, he shot her.”

The distraught grandmother also described how her granddaughter had been sitting next to her best friend at the time of her death who was “covered in blood.”

“My granddaughter was shot and killed for trying to call 911, she died a hero trying to get help for her and her fellow classmates,” Ms Arreola added.

How many people died?

Police later confirmed that all of the victims were in Amerie’s Jo’s classroom as they were shot dead by a handgun and a rifle that was allegedly in Ramos’ possession.

In total, the 18-year-old reportedly gunned down 21 people, including two teachers.

He also allegedly shot his grandmother before entering the school, Governor Greg Abbott said, via ABC 13.

At this time, the motive behind the school shooting is unclear, and so are details surrounding Ramos' personal life.

However, authorities believe the gunman acted alone.
