THE Weeknd began impressing fans in 2015 with hit singles "Can’t Feel My Face," "Earned It" and "The Hills."
The superstar singer and self-proclaimed mama's boy – whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – recently returned to his old look in a new Super Bowl commercial.
Where is the Weeknd from?
The Weekend was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada.
His parents – Samra and Makkonen Tesfaye – were Ethiopian immigrants who fled to Canada.
Samra and Makkonen Tesfaye split up shortly after their son's birth – leaving The Weeknd to be raised by his mother and grandmother.
What happened to The Weeknd's face?
In his video Save Your Tears, The Weeknd is seen with prosthetics to emulate the look of extreme plastic surgery, fillers and Botox.
This follows from his previous hit Blinding Lights, in which he wanted to raise awareness of drink-driving.
When he arrived at the AMAs 2020 with his head, jaw, and nose completely bandaged, The Weeknd looked as if he'd either been in a terrible accident or just had a face lift.
But the singer isn't injured and he hasn't had cosmetic surgery either.
Instead, the horrifying make-up is to raise awareness against drink driving.
The Weeknd hasn't revealed for how long he'll continue to alter his look for events and videos.
When is the Weeknd's next performance?
The Weeknd will perform during the halftime show of the Super Bowl on February 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
The Super Bowl will be a matchup of the Kansas City Chiefs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The singer returned to his old look in a new Super Bowl commercial promoting his upcoming halftime show.
