Urgent hunt for evil double-killer who murdered girlfriend, 19, as he escapes prison for SECOND time

POLICE have launched a manhunt after a double killer who murdered his ex-girlfriend has escaped from prison for a SECOND time.

Darren Pilkington, 39, was jailed in 2006 for murdering Carly Fairhurst, 19, after pushing her down the stairs at their home in Wigan.

He was caged for an indefinite period by a judge, who ruled that he was a “serious risk to the public”, before being released in 2016.

Violent Pilkington was jailed for four years in 2001, aged 15, after beating 30-year-old Paul Akister to death.

The killer was sentenced to four years in a Young Offenders Institution, before being released and later killing Carly.

The career criminal was jailed for the sixth time last year after going on the run from his bail hostel, and was found in Wigan.

He is banned from the area as part of his bail, and has managed to escape prison again after fleeing from the Category D jail on Wednesday.

Carly’s devastated family have hit out at the “cushy” prison conditions that their daughter’s killer has enjoyed.

Trevor Fairhurst said: “Apparently he had applied to the governor to go on escorted day release and it would then be up to the governor as to whether he would be granted a temporary licence.

“But then he did a runner before he got an answer.”

Her mother, Sheila, told the Mirror: “He’s a danger to the public. We’ve been told the only way he’ll never be released is if he kills a third person.

“How ridiculous is that? Pilkington will always be a danger to women and everyone else.”

Pilkington was drunk when he pushed Carly down the stairs, and left her dying overnight before eventually calling an ambulance.

Teenager Carly died six days after the incident, and never regained conciousness.

The court heard that Pilkington had puled a duvet next to her body and fell asleep, before claiming that he had just found her to medics.
