An off-duty Texas cop shot his son in the arm after mistaking him for an intruder in their home, according to officials.
The unidentified cop did not know that his adult son was inside the home in the Dallas suburb of DeSoto — and was panicked when he saw their garage open and locked doors now unexpectedly unlocked, according to NBC DFW.
“He thought there might have been an intruder in the house,” Officer Pete Schulte of DeSoto police told the station.
“It was a startling situation. It was an accident,” Schulte said. “Things happened very quickly.”
The son, who is in his 20s, was “lightly struck by a bullet in his arm” and taken to a local hospital,” Schulte said.
“Fortunately, we’re very happy that it did not result in any serious bodily injury or death,” he said.
The officer is a long-term veteran of the Dallas police department, Schulte said. It was not clear if he had used his service weapon in the shooting.
“I don’t expect that with the evidence we have today that there will be any criminal charges,” the spokesman said, insisting that the off-duty cop’s statements were “consistent” with evidence.
“We do not indicate any foul play on behalf of the Dallas police officer,” he said.
