Coach driver checks his phone with both hands off the steering wheel seconds before crashing into a lorry

This is the heart-stopping moment a coach driver checks his phone briefly while driving on a highway before rear-ending a truck.

The driver appears to be reading messages on the phone with both of his hands off the steering wheel after hearing the handset rang.

The accident took place last Wednesday on a ring road in Xinzhou in northern China’s Shanxi Province, according to police.

It happened on a Chinese national holiday when many families chose to travel. 

At one point, he takes both hands off the steering wheel while reading messages on the phone

All other passengers were said to be unhurt after being rescued through the windows by policemen and firefighters.

The coach crashed into a truck which was transporting bags of corn, reported Xinzhou Morning Post. 

The driver claimed he was reading an alert about upcoming traffic jams when he lost control of his vehicle.

One passenger was injured and hospitalised while the rest were said to be unhurt after being rescued through the windows by police officers and firefighters from Shanxi province

He failed to notice the corn-carrying truck changing lanes and slammed straight into it, the report said. 

The coach pushed the truck forward for more than 10 metres (32.8 feet) before coming to a halt. 

Police are carrying out further investigation.
