At least 22 Covid patients have died after an oxygen tank leaked at a hospital in India.

Footage shows Dr. Zakir Hussain NMC Hospital in Nashik, Maharashtra, enveloped in white clouds of freezing oxygen at around 10am on Wednesday.

Masked witnesses were filmed looking panicked as firefighters raced to the scene to plug the leakage.

The oxygen supply was disrupted for half an hour, it is believed.

It’s suspected a fitting on a large liquid oxygen tank malfunctioned, reducing pressure in the pipelines, according to local media.

State Health Minister Rajesh Tope has ordered an immediate investigation to determine if negligence caused the tragedy.

It comes as other Indian hospitals struggle to cope with a shortage of oxygen amid a dramatic surge in coronavirus cases.

The country recorded the highest daily cases of anywhere in the world ever yesterday, with 314,835 new infections. A total of 2,104 people have lost their lives in the past 24 hours.

A number of hospitals in Delhi ran out of oxygen entirely on Thursday, according to the city’s Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia.

Doctors in India told of how the Covid crisis is spiralling out of control on Wednesday.

At least 215 cases of a so-called ‘double mutant’ variant first found in India have been confirmed in the UK.
