** Warning: Vikings spoilers below – read at your own risk.**
Vikings season six episode four has left us all shook up after watching Lagertha’s village go to war with the stray bandits.
From Prince Oleg’s gruesome murder of Ivar The Boneless’s men to tales of his dead wife, this final installment of the History Channel hit is getting more and more savage as time goes on.
But it seems the director Michael Hirst just did the unthinkable, and brutally killed off Bjorn’s son, Hali, in a harrowing sequence of events.
And if this wasn’t enough for one episode, Kjetil Flatnose has revealed his plans to take down the new king, while Harald Finehair has made his comeback.
It’s a lot to get your teeth sunk into so here are the key moments in case you need a recap.
Let’s just get this one out of the way, because it was not nice to watch and had us ugly crying at Lagertha’s monologue as she said her farewells to her baby grandson.
After the bandits had fled the Shieldmaiden’s village one enemy was left and watched the tot shout out to his grandma: ‘Look Lagertha, look at me!’
Knowing how crushing it would be to kill the bambino, the bandit fled towards him on his horse and ended up striking the youngster with his sword.
Lagertha screamed out in anguish and ran on over to the little one where she scooped him up in her arms.
He whispered: ‘I don’t know if I did enough, I’m sorry,’ to which Lagertha replied: ‘You have nothing to be sorry for, you have been so brave.’
After Hali asked if he was dying, the much-loved character said: ‘You have been more than brave. You are dying, but the Gods are here, Odin is here, he saw how brave you were.
‘I am telling you the truth, you believe me don’t you? Odin will take you to Valhalla, you will be with all the great warriors and heroes of our time.
‘You will be a special person, you will be because your father is Bjorn Ironside and you have been so brave. You will sit in the great halls of the Aesir.’
Lagertha rallies the troops
Hali might have died, but that hasn’t stopped Lagertha from rounding up the troops to take on the bandits once again, not if but when they return.
During the little one’s funeral, the Shieldmaiden asks her people whether they want to run away and hide, or stand strong and fight to avenge the death of the beloveds.
‘We mourn our dead and honour them, but we the living must try and ensure their deaths were not in vain,’ she shouts out.
‘The bandits who attacked us and killed them did not get what they wanted, they did not get our grain or livestock, which means they will come back.’
Putting it to a vote, Lags continued: ‘We can abandon our village and we can hide in the fields and hope they don’t find us, or we could stay we can send a message out to villages for help and prepare again to fight and defend what is ours.’
Hali’s younger sister Asa muttered: ‘I don’t want to leave my brother,’ while another villager shouts: ‘I lost my son, you can all go if you want but I will stay and defend the dead.’
Bjorn and Harald take on Olaf
Harald had fallen ill and called on Bjorn to come and help him take on Olaf – who had occupied the fallen king’s land while he was recovering.
And now, after arriving in Norway, the new ruler came up with certain conditions the pair need to obtain to in order for them to take back control.
‘It is time to give up the old ways of acting and thinking, it is time for a rebirth a new beginning,’ he chanted out loud to the pair: ‘It is time to elect a king for all of Norway, a king who can unite the people, to whom the people can look up to and respect.’
Olaf continued: ‘And what better man than you Bjorn Ironside, what better king to command our poor war-torn, fractured country.’
Knowing that Harald had his eyes set on the position, Bjorn looked uneasy as the kingship was offered to him.
‘Go away and consider my plan, you are both free to do so, but don’t take long to consider your verdict, so much depends on it,’ Olaf sated.
And while we didn’t see any conversation happen between the two leaders, they returned looking like they had a worked up a plan to take down Olaf, as they accepted his offer.
Kjetil Flatnose plots to kill Bjorn
Kjetil Flatnose has revealed his plans to take down Bjorn Ironside, and we know who we’ll be placing bets on.
The warrior came back to Kattegat to deliver the news that Floki has disappeared while convincing people to join his settlers in Iceland.
But it seems Bjorn smells a rat, and is suspicious of why the boatmaker would have just randomly walked away.
Pulling the visitor to one side, the king asked what his motives are before placing the blame on Kjetil for Floki’s death.
And just as we start to feel sorry for the mourning dad, he watched Bjorn walk away while whispering: ‘Each must die someday – even you Bjorn Ironside, even you.’
Whether or not he’s plotting some kind of elaborate takedown, or he’s just pretty annoyed at the rumour Bjorn is starting, we’re interested to see how this storyline will plot out.
Ivar is not longer BFFs with Oleg
After Ivar The Boneless joined Prince Oleg on a primitive hot-air balloon ride, we thought the duo had hit it off with a friendship that would last the entire series.
But we were so wrong as it seems Ivar has grown suspicious of his newfound friend and the lies he’s been telling.
The Prince asked to see his guest where he revealed to the fallen king how he finally has a fleet they can take to Kattegat in an attempt to bring down Bjorn.
Expressing his plans to get Ivar on the throne, he spat: ‘You’re a son of Ragnar Lothbrok, no one can question the legitimacy.’
But this didn’t sit too well with the warrior who told the Rus ruler that he would not be used as a puppet.
‘I’m offering you far more than you’re worth,’ Oleg insisted, adding: ‘You can rule kingdoms! Who gives a damn if it is truly me who rules everything?
He smirked: ‘You will be king, you will be famous, isn’t that what you Vikings like?’
We doubt Ivar will be putting up with this for much longer, but how will he take down Oleg, and will the two turn on each other despite having the same goal?
Vikings season six returns to the History Channel and Amazon Prime on Wednesday.
