Tom Daley planning new career as children's author a month after winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics

HE has made a splash as an Olympic diver and hit a career high after winning gold at Tokyo 2020.

Now Tom Daley is looking to take the plunge into a new career as a kids’ author.

I have learned that Tom, who became a dad to son Robbie in 2018 with his film director husband Dustin Lance Black, has lined up a series of meetings with publishers about the prospect of writing a book.

A source said: “Tom has proved he is a compassionate, driven and talented man who thousands of young people look up to.

“So when the idea of a possible kids’ book came up there was a lot of interest.

“Tom has his debut memoir, Coming Up For Air, out in October and those around him think it’s going to be a bestseller.

“Off the back of that a lot of big-name publishing companies have shown an interest in producing a children’s book.

“There are meetings being lined up next month with Tom’s literary agent to discuss the possibilities.

“Tom has a huge appeal and because of his incredible sport- ing career he is a household name.

“His success at the Tokyo Games only made him stand out more and those
around him think a children’s book would be a brilliant step.

“As a father himself, he knows what works for children and what they like.

“And being able to continue to inspire more chil-dren through a book is a real pull. Tom is incredibly busy but this is something his team wants him to consider.

“They think it would be a roaring success.”

I have to say that I couldn’t agree more.

Tom’s journey to success has not been easy.

In 2011, when the sports ace was just 17, his devoted father Robert passed away after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Tom used the loss to drive himself to success in diving and now he is one of the most recognised sportsmen in the country.

If anyone was going to write a book to help inspire kids in this country, I couldn’t think of a better man.

End of the road for Bottlemen

CATFISH and the Bottlemen won the British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards just five years ago and were tipped to be the next big thing in music.

But having struggled to achieve the success they were hoping for, I’ve heard the rockers have now decided to split up.

The group, formed in 2007 in Llandudno, North Wales, will perform at Reading and Leeds festivals this weekend before two final shows at Swansea’s Singleton Park and Warrington’s Neighbourhood Weekender at the beginning of September before going their separate ways.

They have already formally moved forward with the split as frontman Van McCann is the only band member linked to CATB Live LLP, the company which funnels their live profits.

Meanwhile bassist Benji Blakeway, guitarist Johnny Bond and drummer Bob Hall have all been removed from the firm.

The group went to No1 in the album chart in 2016 with The Ride, one of their three Top Ten albums.

But they are believed to have been left disappointed by the reaction in the US of 2019’s The Balance, which reached No2 here, as they were hoping it would be their ticket to cracking the States.

Representatives for the band refused to comment, remaining tellingly quiet when asked last week if they were breaking up.

But fans should probably prepare for an emotional message when they do play those remaining shows.

Kanye splits from Irina

KIM KARDASHIAN isn’t the only woman Kanye West has lost this year – he has now broken up with model Irina Shayk too.

The rapper had a three-month whirlwind romance with Irina, with the couple holidaying together in France for his 44th birthday in June.

But now they have gone their separate ways — and I really can’t blame her.

He spent almost three weeks living in a stadium in Atlanta while working on his new album Donda until a fortnight ago, while she was sunning herself in Italy.

A source said: “It was never a serious relationship.

“He is just too busy to date anyone right now, he has no time to give to other people because he is so focused on his music and other ventures.

“There’s not been any big fall out though. Irina sort of knew it was never going to be straightforward. It was fun while it lasted.”

I doubt it is only the time apart which put Irina off him.

The Russian beauty, who has a daughter with her ex-boyfriend A-list actor Bradley Cooper, appears to be referred to on a track New Again from his upcoming album in which he raps: “You know you’ll never live up to my ex.”

Kim filed for divorce from Kanye in February but in recent months he has appeared to be getting close to the mother of his four children again.

Plenty of fans will be keeping their fingers crossed they can patch things up.

Scher looks fit

DON’T Cha wish your workouts were as hot as Nicole Scherzinger’s?

The Pussycat Dolls singer showed off some seriously impressive moves in the gym.

As well as doing some very vigorous leg extensions on a bench, Nic put my bicep curls to shame as she did squats with her dumbbells.

But even she realised she was being shameless by doing it all in a tiny bikini.

'Elle of an outfit

THE SATURDAYS singer Rochelle Humes looked like she meant business when she headed out to a party in this oversized blazer.

She joined her JLS star husband Marvin for a bash at the Middle Eight in London’s Covent Garden, which was also attended by Rochelle’s look-a-like sister, Love Island’s Sophie Piper.

The couple and Sophie hit the town for the birthday of celebrity stylist Georgia Medley.

Marvin and Rochelle will celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary next year and to mark the special occasion have said they plan on renewing their vows.

Rochelle, who has three children with Marvin, said: “We called my wedding planner and said, ‘Are you free next year? We think we’re going to do it again.’

“We’re going to put some ideas down and do something nice with it.”

Church gets bold in gold

CHARLOTTE Church didn’t hold back when she took to the stage at Green Man festival, slipping into these racy fishnet tights to entertain the crowds.

The singer looked like she had raided the fancy dress box in thigh-high boots, a gold tasselled top and a multi-coloured, sequined coat at the show in Wales on Friday.

She performed her Late Night Pop Dungeon show, which saw her belting out a series of covers from acts including Destiny's Child, Justin Timberlake and Alanis Morissette.

Charlotte had quite the disguise the following day though, wearing a camouflage raincoat and a woolly hat – perfect for August in mid-Wales.

Regardless of the rain and mud, after a year without gigs this is getting me properly excited for Reading Festival this weekend.

Rob gets pranked

ROB Beckett usually cracks the jokes but he was publicly on the end of one on Saturday.

The comic fell foul to the oldest trick in the book when he read out a rude fake name sent in by a listener while covering Claudia Winkleman’s show on Radio 2.

He said: “My brother Mike Oxmall has just proposed to his girlfriend in the beach cafe on a staycation.”

After being inundated with messages from tickled listeners, Rob admitted:

“It looks like I may have been the victim of a prank.”

Say the name out loud a few times if you don’t get it . . .

RAG’N’BONE MAN wasn’t convinced his No1 album Life By Misadventure was any good.

A three-week recording schedule was cut to six days by Covid and he tells Radio 2 this week: “It was a mad rush and I left with a feeling of, ‘Is this going to be good enough?’”

Too little too late for Tayce

DRAG queen Tayce is unlikely to get a job with Radio 1 show after arriving two and a half hours late to work there.

The performer, from the second series of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, was due to co-host the 7am to 10.30am show alongside Clara Amfo on Saturday as part of the station’s Drag Day.

Clara said on Tayce’s Instagram: “Thank you for the chaos!” Ouch.
