Shetland returned in October for the sixth season of the BBC One crime thriller series and left fans fuelled with excitement. As filming for the season drew to a close, Douglas Henshall, who plays main character Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez, took to his Twitter account and delighted fans with the news of a season seven.
Announcing the end of filming season six, Douglas took to Twitter and wrote: “We are wrapped on Shetland. Production now moves to Glasgow for the rest of season seven.
“As ever, thank you to the people here for your help, support, and patience we couldn’t do it without you. #shetland.”
Fans quickly flooded Douglas’s tweet with replies expressing their excitement about the upcoming season seven.
@weenell3 wrote: “We’re all impatient and excited,” to which @maristic23 replied: “I can concur this is EXACTLY the feelings in our household!”
@MaybeeitsMeee commented: “Can’t wait for this one, it’s gonna be a great loss when it ends, I’ve spent many blissful hours watching Shetland.
“Huge thanks to everyone for their part in making this drama possible, not forgetting the wonderful Shetlanders and the class act that is Perez, thank you.”
@ggor82 added: “Rewatching from the very beginning in preparation for the new series! Can’t wait!”
@HackedOffStu echoed: “Can’t wait, Douglas, brilliant series, great characters and top television drama!”
The sixth season was originally supposed to air in 2020 and was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Shetland Times reported seasons six and seven were being filmed back-to-back.
Fans will have to keep watching to see what secrets DI Jimmy Perez uncovers from Shetland’s past and how we will deal with his own traumas.
The six-part crime thriller returned to viewers screens after a two-year hiatus, with Perez facing personal tragedy along with a tricky murder to solve.
The drama’s fifth series ended on a bombshell when Jimmy discovered that Alice, the woman he had fallen in love with, was behind the human trafficking ring.
In the latest series, as episode one aired last week (October 20), Jimmy investigates the murder of a prominent local figure.
Ahead of last week’s series, Douglas once again took to his Twitter account and teased fans on the upcoming episode: “Things are going to get turned up a notch or two in #Shetland tonight.”
Douglas has recently opened up about his major storyline and revealed why it was an “unpleasant” experience for him.
Speaking to Scotsman about series six, Douglas said: “Grief if an overarching theme for him, his dad’s suffering from dementia, he’s trying to deal with his dad and do his job and deal with grief.
“It’s never pleasant to go to places like that, I mean, I know what it’s like to lose your mum; I’ve been through that.
“Although it was donkeys’ years ago, and I have to go and visit those places, and I don’t find it particularly pleasant.
“I always feel I’d like to just play people who are a bit less complicated, but that came off, at least I hope it did,” Douglas concluded.
Shetland continues every Wednesday on BBC One at 9pm.
