Outlander season six is on its way after filming officially began in early 2021. This news was confirmed by Starz in a new special teaser for the series and it will see the return of Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) as they head towards the Revolutionary War. Ahead of its release, Express.co.uk has compiled all you need to know about the release date, cast, trailer and plot of the new series ahead of its return.
When will Outlander season 6 be released?
Back in 2018, Starz announced a double renewal of the popular show ahead of its fifth season.
The fifth season was pushed back from its original air date of late 2019 and was only released in February 2020.
As a result, fans of the show were left concerned there may be another delay heading into season six.
This was seemingly hinted at by Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan who told Digital Spy there could be similar gap.
He said: “I’m not sure the exact dates at the moment, but I think it might be the same.”
He also joked: “There will be a Droughtlander but they can go see my movies.”
Production was stalled by the outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 shutting down TV production.
However, Starz has since confirmed that Outlander season six will premiere on Sunday, March 6, 2022, and therefore putting an end to Droughlander at last.
Who is in the cast of Outlander season 6?
Fans will be pleased to know both of the show’s major stars will be coming back again for season six.
This means viewers will get to see plenty more of Sam Heughan as the Scottish heartthrob Jamie Fraser.
Caitriona Balfe will be also be back as his wife Claire Fraser as the pair no doubt deal with more peril in the upcoming outings.
While other cast members have not been confirmed, some of the major stars expected to be back include Sophie Skelton as their daughter Brianna Randall Fraser as well as Richard Rankin as her husband Roger Wakefield.
Express.co.uk will update this article as soon as more cast members are revealed for the upcoming series.

What will happen in Outlander season 6?
WARNING: This section contains minor spoilers for Diana Gabaldon’s series
No official plot details have been released for Outlander season six as of yet, but it is likely it will follow the sixth book in Diana Gabaldon’s series.
This means the show will loosely be based on A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which was released back in 2005.
The novel focuses more on the aftermath of season five, which sees Jamie drawn into the American Revolution.
This will pick up after the fifth book which saw the political unrest heighten while the Frasers attempted to lead a peaceful life in North Carolina.
However, it is not certain the new season of the show will follow the trajectory of the books.
This comes after Executive producer Ronald Moore spoke to Entertainment Weekly about their approach to upcoming seasons of the show.
He said: “Every year we approach it fresh. Should we keep it a book a season?
“We’ve done that up until now. But we’ve talked about splitting books, and we’ve talked about combining them.
“We want to be free in the writers’ room to pick and choose and do what feels most comfortable that year.”
Moore also revealed how the new outing will see them head closer to the American Revolution in an interview with Collider.
“The large [thing] that’s still defining where we are is we’re in the new world, we’re in the American colonies and the American Revolution is getting closer.
“So that’s a big thing that’s going to be moving front and centre the further that we get into season six.”
Some of the producers have also hinted about potential trouble ahead for Jamie and Claire.
Speaking to Elle, Matthew B Roberts said: “I think what’s going on in the world at the time, 1775, is really similar to what’s going on with Jamie and Claire.
“There’s going to be a revolution with them as well, and I think that’s what’s going on throughout the season.
“You have a foundation and when that foundation is shaken and there is a revolution, you have to deal with it. That’s kind of the theme of the season.”
In a special video announcing production beginning on the new season, the first episode title was also released.
This will be called Echoes and will mark the start of the much-loved period drama.
Is there a trailer for Outlander season 6?
During the New York Comic-Con convention on October 9, 2021, a trailer was released for the new episodes airing in early 2022.
The 50-second trailer begins with all the main characters seemingly happy in their lives.
However, the arrival of some revolution guards at Fraser’s Ridge sets everyone on edge as the war looms.
Claire is heard telling her husband Jamie: “It’s nearly here.”
With the ominous tone bringing the trailer to an end, it seems lives are about to be changed forever.
A second trailer was released on Wednesday, January 19, which sees a coffin being carried but who dies?
Claire also says in a dramatic voiceover: “I don’t belong here, Brianna, Roger, they don’t belong here.
“And yet, here we are, all of us, because I loved you, more than the life that I had. And this, I promise you, won’t come between us”.
Outlander season 6 will premiere on Sunday, March 6, on Starz.
