The fifth and final season of Money Heist will finally arrive this week, with the first five of ten episodes dropping on Netflix on Friday. An action-packed trailer has teased the Spanish drama’s most intense outing yet, and fans are worried they could be about to say goodbye to some of their favourite characters.
Rio (played by Miguel Herrán) could be one of several fatalities in the upcoming final season of Netflix’s international hit, Money Heist.
The youngest member of the Professor’s (Álvaro Morte) band of robbers has been an integral member of the cast since the show’s first season.
His tumultuous relationship with fellow criminal Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) has often caused complications throughout the show’s two heists within the Royal Mint and the Bank of Spain.
A number of clues from the previous outings, and the recent trailer, have now led some fans to believe their romance could end in tragedy by the end of season five.
One viewer took to Reddit to propose the addition of Tokyo’s dead ex-boyfriend, portrayed by newcomer Miguel Ángel Silvestre, could be foreshadowing for Rio’s fate.
User MynameisntWejdene posted: “I think the writers might want to end the final season as a throwback to the first episodes.
“The ending of the pilot is Tokyo screaming and dragging out an injured Rio, realizing she can lose another boyfriend at any time. That seems to be her worst nightmare.”
The ending of Money Heist’s second season concluded with Tokyo receiving a massive wakeup call, and the long awaited series finale could bring things full circle.
Fans already felt the new trailer could spell trouble for Rio when it comes to the robbers to confront the police head on as the second heist comes to an end.
Moreover, season five is confirmed to reveal more about the death of Tokyo’s boyfriend before the main events of the series started.
As the narrator of the series, she is arguably Money Heist’s most important character behind the Professor, and has therefore undergone extensive character development over the first four seasons.
However, her character arc has yet to reach its conclusion, and this fan is convinced her relationship with Rio could parallel the tragic fate of her previous boyfriend.

They continued: “So I think the writers really want to make her suffer like this, which would make her grow in the end.”
Tokyo’s experience with the Professor and the robbers has certainly taken its toll throughout the series.
She has certainly become even more hardened following the death of Nairobi (Alba Flores) at the end of season four, and is ready to go to war with the police as the second heist reaches its bloody conclusion.
The death of Rio could push her even further off the edge and bring Tokyo closer to where she is recalling the events to the audience after the fact.
“Plus the scene in the trailer showing her and her ex-boyfriend as a flashback or dream makes me guess she thinks about him again when she loses Rio,” the fan concluded.
Money Heist has relied on flashbacks to reveal more about its charismatic cast of criminals, and Tokyo’s backstory will finally be explored in season five.
In addition to providing some valuable context to her life before she met the Professor, these flashback scenes could also be a sinister way of foreshadowing Rio’s death at some point in the final episodes.
Money Heist Part 5: Volume 1 will be released on Friday, September 3 on Netflix. Volume 2 is coming Friday, December 3.
