On Thursday, John Lewis dropped their Christmas advert one week earlier than expected. The festive clip follows the charming story of friendship between a young boy called Nathan and space traveller Skye. However, some viewers were left outraged by the retailer’s advert.

The advert begins with Nathan discovering Skye while making his journey home.

Nathan spots a UFO crash landing and rushes into the woods to discover who or what has landed near his home.

The young boy meets Skye who has never experienced Christmas before.

Skye is introduced to his family’s festive traditions as he brings the woods to life for her.

Nathan then takes part in his family’s traditions at home before recreating them for Skye.

The new friends decorate a tree with fairy lights and enjoy a mince pie together.

As their friendship blossoms, Nathan sweetly gifts her his Christmas jumper before saying goodbye.

However, many viewers claimed the festive clip was too similar to the film E.T.

The 1980s film tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed E.T, who is stranded on Earth.

Taking to social media, Kathryn penned: “John Lewis advert is basically ET isn’t it?”

Ali said: “The #johnlewisadvert is like ET. Without the emotion.”

Bryan raged: “It’s a terribly unoriginal idea; an ET comes to earth, learns about life here, makes a human child friend and leaves. Think it’s been done.”

“Out unusually early for Christmas but for all the tech wizardry, the #johnlewisadvert is a trite ET ripoff. No classic,” Paul tweeted.

Other viewers felt “underwhelmed” by the festive advert, with Megan saying: Can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed by the @JohnLewisRetail ad this year!

“Absolutely loved the outdoor marketing tactics that popped up across the UK but the advert itself just hasn’t landed with me (pardon the pun) #johnlewisadvert.” (sic)

Brent pointed out: “Problem with John Lewis adverts are your expectations are very high now. Thought it was just average this year.”

However, not everyone was unhappy with the ad. Many claimed the two-minute clip made them cry.

Twitter-user @Cezabelle said: “Every year, without fail, I cry within the first few seconds. Lovely advert this year.”

Georgia wrote: “Oh, come on!! Every year I’m waiting for the John Lewis Christmas ad and every time I cry my eyes out! “

“The #johnlewisadvert made me cry! It’s the song,” Kirsty explained.
