JESSICA Simpson shared an unrecognizable photo of herself as she opened up about her sobriety journey in a “wildly honest” letter to her younger self.
The 41-year-old singer revealed it took a lot of “courage” to stop drinking alcohol and start putting in the “real work” of learning more about herself.
On Monday, Jessica shared a makeup-free photo of herself from a few years ago, as she sat alone in the dark, looking sad and overwhelmed.
“This person in the early morning of Nov 1, 2017 is an unrecognizable version of myself,” the fashion designer explained in the caption.
She continued: “I had so much self discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity.
“Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted.
“I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honor.”
Explaining more of how she came to the decision to stop drinking, Jessica shared that she needed to stop going in circles and move in a new direction.
She didn’t want to live with any “regret and remorse” in life and felt the only way to do that was to go down a new path “within this beautiful world.”
“I can’t believe it has been 4yrs! It feels like maybe 2,” the mother-of-three joked. “I think that is a good thing. Ha.”
Continuing, the actress shared in her honest note: “There is so much stigma around the word alcoholism or the label of an alcoholic.
“The real work that needed to be done in my life was to actually accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self sabotage.
“The drinking wasn’t the issue. I was. I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do.”
The 41-year-old concluded: “I have made nice with the fears and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad.
“I own my personal power with soulful courage. I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free.”
In the comments, Jessica’s celebrity friends sent her a lot of love and support.
Jordin Sparks told her: “This is so inspiring! You should be so proud of yourself!”
Candace Cameron Bure and Kyle Richards each sent over a bunch of heart emojis.
Chelsea Handler called the singer “WILDLY HONEST.”
Snooki wrote: “YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION & this is exactly why are you literally my role model and mom. Love you forever 🙏🏽”
Since starting her sobriety journey in 2017, Jessica has also been working hard on the fitness side of her health overhaul.
She first flaunted her 100-pound weight loss in Daisy Dukes denim shorts for a fashion campaign in late 2019, just months after giving birth to her daughter Birdie.
She worked with her coach and friend Harley Pasternak, who had her walking 6,000 steps daily with her three children and upped it to 14,000 steps a day.
At the same time, he had Jessica on his Harley’s Body Reset Diet, which includes three meals a day as well as two snacks.
Jessica also did 45-minute workout routines three times per week and tried to sleep seven hours a night.
