The Countryfile star made her dancing debut on last week’s Strictly Come Dancing, and on Thursday it was her and Gorka’s turn to chat about their experience on spin-off show, It Takes Two. As Gorka paid tribute to his celebrity partner, urging her to believe in herself, Helen Skelton explained on the BBC show how both he and Gemma have become more like friends despite him being her teacher as she talked about the support she has received.
As the duo joined Janette Manrara on the It Takes Two sofa, they were full of praise for one another.
“Gorka, the judges were full of praise for Helen but Anton [Du Beke] did mention that he wants to see her really take ownership of the dances,” Janette pointed out.
She went on to ask the Spanish dancer: “Do you agree with him?”
“Yeah,” Gorka replied. “I think, like I mentioned the other day, obviously at the minute, her confidence is not [the] highest.
“So, I just want her to work on building her confidence and tell her that she’s a beautiful dancer, and that she does well.
“And you know, that I believe in her, I know she has potential – I just need her to believe in herself.”
Turning to Helen, he continued: “Because this goes very quickly and the quicker she does that, the more she’s going to be able to enjoy it.
“And just believe in yourself, because you work very hard. And you’re doing incredibly.”
“You’re very kind,” Helen replied, smiling. She added: “Everyone gushes about their teacher, and everyone gushes and gushes and says their teachers are amazing, and you are amazing.
“But, you and Gemma have been really kind to me as a friend more than anything else.”
Gemma took part in the 2017 series of Strictly and was competing against the now-32-year-old dancer.
The two are now engaged after Gorka popped the question on Valentine’s Day 2021.
The couple also have a daughter, who was born in 2019.
It seems Gemma has been supporting Gorka’s dance partner, with the Countryfile favourite labelling the pair as her friends.
However, Janette was quick to point out that the next show would bring another challenge.
“Well listen, don’t get too ahead of yourself because you’ve got another dance coming up – that might change.
“You’re doing the Cha Cha this week! Helen, how are you finding your first Latin dance?”
“Erm, I was desperate to do fast Latin dance and now I’m like… if we get through this week, will we get a ballroom?” She laughed.
“Yeah, I remember on the first day she said, ‘I think I will struggle with the slow dance, I will be [better] on the fast ones’.
“So I asked that question [again] and she was like, ‘Do you know what? I think I enjoy the Ballroom now,'” Gorka laughed.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
