There is nothing quite like the Great British Bake Off on TV, with fans drooling over spectacular creations as well as critiquing some of the less than impressive bakes. The Channel 4 series returned this evening (Tuesday, September 13) with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith back as the judges and Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas as the hosts. The premiere episode went off without a hitch but it was the final few moments that caught viewers’ attention.

Who is Chloe Avery?

The Great British Bake Off season 13’s first episode ended on a solemn note with an unexpected title card.

A photograph was shown of Chloe Avery in the iconic tent, donning an apron and holding up a mug.

The caption below simply reads: “In loving memory of Chloe Avery. 1980-22”.

According to Chloe’s LinkedIn page, she worked as a series producer for Love Productions, GBBO’s production company for the past eight years.

Her IMDb page also reveals that she worked on The Great Comic Relief Bake Off back in 2015 as a food producer.

This particular series featured the lies of Jennifer Saunders, Jameela Jamil, Michael Sheen, David Mitchell and Dame Edna, just to name a few.

Chloe then returned as an edit producer for an episode in the 2018 series.

Fans will remember that the endearing Rahul was crowned the baking champion that year.

Going by the title card, Chloe was 42 years old when she died but as of yet, no cause of yet has been made public.

GBBO fans took to social media to react to the show’s tribute to Chloe.

Giving more detail about who Chloe was, Kat Brown explained: “Chloe Avery, who was remembered on #GBBO just now, died this month.

“She was the show’s food producer; devi

“sing the signature and technical challenges, helping celebrities with their recipes, and working on other spin-offs. My best wishes to all those who knew and loved her.”

@Rememiranda commented: “The biggest of hugs to the loved ones of Chloë Avery #GBBO.”

Sarah Burr added: “That tribute to @LoveProductions’ Chloe at the end was lovely. What a wonderful, patient, kind woman she was #gbbo”.

GBBO saw 12 more contestants welcomed to the tent to try and impress Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with their hopefully delicious treats.

They were tasked with first making mini sandwich cakes, followed by the technical challenge of a red velvet cake and showstoppers that resembled their own homes.

Unfortunately, it was the beginning of the end for Will, 45, as his bakes didn’t quite live up to their expectations and, as a result, he was sent home.

But it was a very different story for another baker in tent who was given the title of star baker.

Janusz, a 34-year-old personal assistant from East Sussex, wowed the judges with all three of his bakes.

Upon hearing the news, Janusz cried happy tears, leading to his fellow bakers comforting him with kind words and hugs.

So could this be the start of a winning streak for Janusz as GBBO begins?

The Great British Bake Off continues every Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
