'Gilmore Girls': 3 Times the Show Failed to Adequately Write off a Character

For seven seasons, Gilmore Girls showrunner, Amy Sherman-Palladino, introduced many side characters into Stars Hollow. Some stayed on the series for a complete story arc, while others disappeared without a trace. Fans have long wondered what happened to some of the characters that Sherman-Palladino didn’t adequately write off. Do you remember these characters that showed up and then were never heard from again?

Gilmore Girls fans want to know what became of Kyle Gibson

Dean Forrester and Kyle Gibson were fairly good friends. Kyle first appeared on Gilmore Girls in the season 3 episode, “Keg! Max!”. He popped up several more times, most notably for Dean’s bachelor party and then again as the friend Dean was living with after his divorce from Lindsay Lister. Kyle appeared one more time in “Live and Let Diorama” in season 5. After that, he disappeared.

Fans often wonder what became of the Navy veteran. When he last appeared on screen, he was living back in Stars Hollow after being injured overseas. Did he ever settle down with one special lady, or is he still playing the field to the sounds of “Superfreak”? Sadly, fans will never know. Sherman-Palladino dropped the character when Dean disappeared from the small Connecticut hamlet.

Jason Stiles was dumped after Lorelai and Luke got together

For most of season 4, Lorelai Gilmore was dating her father’s business partner, Jason Stiles. While fans were largely happy to see Jason go so Lorelai and Luke could fall in love, his storyline ended too abruptly for some viewers. During the original series, Jason showed up at the Dragonfly Inn to win Lorelai back. He headed to the bathroom and was never seen during the original series again.

Sookie St. James later explained to Lorelai that Jason was told his condo was on fire, causing him to leave the inn. His condo was never actually on fire, and it seems unlikely that Jason would have given up his pursuit of Lorelai so easily. In Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Jason returned for Richard Gilmore’s funeral, but fans never learned what he was doing between heading to the bathroom at the Dragonfly in 2005 and showing up at Richard’s memorial. While not everyone loved Jason and Lorelai together, he was an important character, and he deserved more than such a sudden disappearance.

Fans wonder if Dwight ever returned from his business trip

Dwight appeared in exactly one episode of season 3, although he certainly made it sound like he was in Stars Hollow to stay. Dwight was a recently divorced man who moved into the house next door to Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Beanie Morrison’s old place was the exact home he envisioned for himself, and he was settling in rather nicely.

Dwight went on a business trip, leaving Lorelai in charge of watering his lawn. He never returned, and the show did not explain his sudden absence. One Reddit user theorized that Dwight moved again because his ex-wife found his phone number and, presumably, tracked him down.
