Netflix series Dark is now at an end sadly following the release of the third and final instalment. While fans did get a happy ending, there are still lots of things which were left unanswered and have been perplexing fans still. Dark’s creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese have addressed one of the biggest burning questions in the show.

Is Jonas alive in the Origin World in Dark?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from all seasons of Dark on Netflix

Season three ended with Martha Nielsen (played by Lisa Vicari) and Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) destroying the Knot once and for all.

They managed to finally succeed after they found out the truth about their two interconnected worlds, which were locked in a deterministic and infinite loop.

Claudia Tiedemann (Julika Jenkins) revealed there was a third dimension – know as the Origin World from which the Knot had been created.

Only from the Origin World could all the damage of the Knot be undone with the teens traveLling to this new world to stop it all.

Martha and Jonas were successful and after they changed the course of events, the pair started to disappear into thin air and ceased to exist.

They weren’t the only ones, all the characters inside the Knot disintegrated and a sense of peace descended.

Nonetheless, there seemed to be hope a version of Jonas had survived in the Origin World after his mother Hannah Kahnwald (Maja Schöne) suggested she was going to give her unborn child the same name.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s creators addressed the moment with Friese saying: “We are big believers in ambivalence.

“We don’t think there’s only one answer to a thing. That relates to everything.

“It’s both hopeful and ominous at the same time. In other [projects] we’ve done before, we don’t like to end on a dot.

“We put a dot, wait a little, and then we put a question mark at the end. It’s just a nice nuance with which to end.”

While Odar said: “It’s really up to the audience to answer it. I have an answer, but it’s very personal.

“You might have an answer, and it’s very personal. That’s the beauty of storytelling. You will have something very personal toward the story.

“It’s the same with Blade Runner, and how there are still people thinking Harrison Ford is not a replicant; where I’m thinking, ‘How can you think he’s not a replicant?’”

He added: “That’s the beauty of that story, that there’s a question mark.”

From their words, it looks like it’s up to the viewers to make up their minds about Jonas.

However, they clearly have their own views on the story but wouldn’t be drawn on them.

Even though they haven’t given anything away, they have both dropped hopeful hints about Jonas in the show – particularly the scene where the teens were travelling to the Origin World.

Martha and Jonas saw versions of one another in the vortex or time space continuum, hinting they had survived.

Also, the iconic yellow raincoat was seen in the shown as Hannah revealed she was going to call her son Jonas.

All of these things, heavily implied Jonas was alive and would continue to exist in one way or another.
