Bertie Carvel steps into the role of Adam Dalgliesh, PD James’ iconic detective who was first portrayed by Roy Marsden. In the first part of Shroud for a Nightingale on Channel 5, Dalgliesh and his partner Charles Masterson (played by Jeremy Irvine) investigate a horrific death of a student nurse.

The latest adaptation of James’ series of crime novels kicks off the mystery with one of the most unpleasant death scenes in recent memory.

Student nurse Heather Pearce (Beccy Henderson) takes part in a training exercise to learn how to feed patients via a tube to the stomach.

With a long pipe fed down her throat, the procedure goes horribly wrong and Heather falls to the floor, convulsing.

Her fellow nurses soon discover the milk used in the exercise had been spiked with poison, and Dalgliesh is called to the scene to get to the bottom of her tragic demise.

The series certainly got off on a strong start, but many viewers were put off by the appalling method of murder so soon after the watershed.

Several Channel 5 viewers took to Twitter almost immediately after the episode aired to complain about the intense opening sequence.

User James Aithie tweeted: “JESUS CHRIST!!!! That scene was as horrific as the first time I saw Alien.”

Though he also clarified: “This is extremely well directed, plus Bertie Carvel is a phenomenal actor.”

Dalgliesh has received strong responses so far, with particular praise heaped on Carvel’s leading turn as the titular sleuth.

However, the first two-parter of Channel 5’s revival opened with a strong mission statement and made it clear the new detective drama isn’t for younger viewers.

Angela Thompson posted: “Yuk surely this wouldn’t really happen!

“It’s making me feel sick. Obviously, she didn’t like it either!!!”

Feeling sympathy for actress Beccy Henderson, she added: “I would have gagged and thrown up!!”

And Katherine Ramsey said: “B****y hell, well that makes a welcome change from a ‘girl running through a wood’ start.”

Meanwhile, user @FlopsyPickle had some complaints about the logistics of the procedure.

“Not a chance that tube would have gone down that easy,” she claimed.

“It’s bad enough trying to put one in with the small ones we have these days.

“Also yes, it can hurt! Especially if it’s not done correctly.”

Hopefully murder victim Henderson managed to film the scene without the unpleasantness of the real procedure, and Dalgliesh catches the twisted killer next week.

Dalgliesh continues Thursdays at 9pm on Channel 5 in the UK and is available to stream on Acorn TV in the US.
