Originally S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (played by Samuel L Jackson) created the Avengers to protect from otherworldly dangers. Fury himself described Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as defenders against threats the human race couldn’t face. The Disney Plus show WandaVision revealed another division to the company: S.W.O.R.D. – The Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division. Director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) explained in episode five of the show that the company moved from space missions and reconnaissance to “robotics, nanotech, A.I. – sentient weapons like it says on the door” – a change that occurred because of Avengers Endgame.
After the Snap most of the Avengers had been blipped out of existence by Thanos (Josh Brolin) including Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd).
Without their help to defend from other threats in the universe, S.W.O.R.D. became more aggressive to fight back against enemies.
In the five years between Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, S.W.O.R.D. likely took on other threats which made their way to Earth.
Thanos’ destruction of half of the universe left S.W.O.R.D. worried about what would happen if Earth was left without any Avengers to help them.
This fear is what prompted the events of WandaVision.
Earlier in WandaVision it was revealed the company had been trying to bring Vision (Paul Bettany) back to life as a sentient weapon.
This drastic decision only occurred because there were no Avengers left to defend them.
Hayward and his company considered Vision their only option to create an Avenger-level weapon capable of defending against another Thanos-level threat.
So then, it was a mighty blow for S.W.O.R.D. when their property – Vision – was then stolen by Wanda / Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).
Vision is objectively the most powerful weapon on the planet considering he was an entirely autonomous vibranium robot with the power of an Infinity Stone.

Recreating the Synthezoid from scratch would be near-on impossible for the company, but with his corpse in hand they stood a chance at building an army of Vision-like robots to take on any new threats they were faced with.
Of course, the biggest threat to them at the moment is Wanda herself.
The Avenger took Vision’s body back and reanimated it using her magical powers while enslaving the entire town of Westview.
S.W.O.R.D. have been developing weapons to defend against extraterrestrials, so Wanda may be attacked in the coming episodes by one of their newly created tools.

S.W.O.R.D. are going to have a lot more threats on their radar in the coming episodes, however.
The latest WandaVision episode began her biggest comic book story: House of M.
In House of M Wanda removes every trace of the mutant gene in the Marvel universe, getting rid of the powers held by the X-Men and their allies.
Considering there are no mutants in the MCU yet it has been theorised that Wanda will instead hold a reverse House of M situation and create mutants instead.
By summoning the mutant gene Wanda will bring about countless more superpowered people on Earth.
This event will also bring about the arrival of the MCU’s X-Men for the first time.
The cinematic rights to the X-Men were previously owned by FOX, but after the company was bought by Disney theyo are reportedly working on its first set of films including Logan, Professor X, and Cyclops.
Avengers Endgame and WandaVision are available on Disney Plus now.
