At the end of tonight’s Coronation Street, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) was charged with assault after punching smarmy surgeon Mr Thorne (Dominic Mafham), after sick details came to light about his liver transplant operation.
Aggie (Lorna Laidlaw) shared with Peter and Carla (Alison King) that she’d overheard Thorne bragging that he’d done Peter’s surgery in record time to win a bet. Carla was incredulous at first, as she’d been waiting and worrying for eight hours while Peter had his operation. Aggie said she’d checked the records and the operation had taken Thorne less than four hours. Carla was only told that it was over after Peter came round in the ICU.
A furious Peter and Carla were reassured that the hospital was investigating and Thorne had been suspended, but when they met a member of the hospital management team even worse was to come.
It was revealed that Thorne had shared a selfie of himself in the operating theatre, holding Peter’s liver in his hands. The picture was captioned ‘Anyone for foie gras?’ with a reference to the duck or goose liver paté that’s often made by force-feeding the animal.
A horrified Peter worried that if his transplant failed he would be facing another op and a suitable liver might not be found a second time. The hospital reassured him that he’s fine, but Peter still demanded that Thorne be struck off for his unethical and vile treatment of him.
He was told that he’d be able to give evidence at the enquiry, but later on Peter tracked Thorne down to a fancy restaurant and demanded an apology. When Thorne showed no signs of remorse and just treated Peter in a patronising and offhand way, Peter saw red, and punched him.
And, although we don’t condone violence, you’d have to say that Thorne fully deserved it.
But now Peter has been charged with assault. Could he be heading for prison?
