Alex Jones breaks down in tears as she's reunited with her mother

Alex Jones got a very emotional surprise on The One Show tonight as she was reunited with her mother live-on-air for the first time in four months.

The Welsh anchor was presenting the daily show alongside former Strictly Come Dancing star Alex Scott, when a surprise last-minute message came in from a viewer at home.

Footballer Alex read out a message from Mary near Swansea, who was anxious to be reunited with her daughter now that travel restrictions in Wales are due to be lifted.

Then, as a surprise for the main host before she headed off on a much-needed two week break, her mother joined live the studio via a video call.

‘Oh, Mam!’ she cried. ‘Oh, Mam! It’s not going to be very long [until we reunite] what is it, five days?’

‘It’s been four very long months,’ her mother replied, and both mother and daughter were soon breaking into tears.

‘Normally, Mam’s very put-together,’ Alex explained, ‘but this is the first time I’ve seen her get quite emotional.’

What followed was then a touching tribute by her co-host for all of Alex’s hard work keeping the nation entertained during lockdown.

‘It’s been a real privilege to come to work every day with all of you lot,’ she explained, pointing to the crew and viewers at home.

‘And thank you, as my family, for getting me through this really weird time, honestly it’s been a real honour to do this job.’

Well, now that’s us crying, you know how much we love a family reunion, especially one broadcast live to the nation.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
