A Place in the Sun's Ben Hillman caught off guard as couple blast 'silly' property price

A PLACE in the Sun host Ben Hillman was shocked when one guest hit back at him at over the 'silly' price of a property.

The veteran property guru was showing couple Gary and Jane around properties on the Costa del Sol in the Channel 4 hit property show.

They had visited the area many times but were keen to specifically buy in Casares, and told Ben the reason why.

“Well when you look at how south it is and you can get more for your money," Gary said.

“You’ve got more daylight hours, more sunshine, it’s just a nicer climate.”

The sporty couple were looking for a spacious home with plenty of storage space for all of their outdoor hobbies.

“We’re both qualified scuba divers,” Jane told Ben and Gary added: “We do a lot of inland kayaking.”

The property search was a bit of a slog for the trio and it wasn't until the fifth property they looked at, that the couple found something they were happy with.

They decided to put an offer on a three-bedroom townhouse in La Duquesa.

It was for sale for £162,162 but Gary wanted to offer £152,500.

“We love the property,” Gary told Ben. “But the Yorkshire in me doesn’t want to pay full price because that’s silly.”

Jane said: “That’s a reasonable price for that property.” Jane noted and Ben added: “Look what you’re getting for that money.”

Then when Ben told them their offer had been accepted, he asked them, "you’ve done so well. Are you over the moon?”

“We’re chuffed,” Gary and Jane joked with him: “You’ve got some spare cash.”

They then heaped praise onto the presenter.

“You’re alright,” Jane told him.

“You’ve done your job, Ben.”

Ben joined A Place In the Sun in 2015 and also runs an interior design business in Brighton.

He completed his own self-build project in the heart of city, facelifting a 1970s purpose built block of flats.

Ben studied Product and Furniture Design at Ravensbourne College and worked coordinating photoshoots for an interior design company.

Then he launched a range of colour changing ambient greetings cards and pioneered the trend for laser cut stationery.

In 2010 Ben won ITV's nationwide search for 'The Next Big Thing' in interior design.

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4.
