Britain’s defending champion Geraint Thomas lost time on Tour de France leader Julian Alaphilippe, who won the 27km time trial on stage 13 in Pau.
Frenchman Alaphilippe, 27, extended his overall lead to one minute 26 seconds with a magnificent ride over which saw him finish 14 seconds ahead of Thomas in second.
“I didn’t really expect that from Alaphilippe,” Thomas told ITV4.
“The way he’s riding, if he can keep that up, he’ll win.”
