'Me and my family will never forget this' – Cristiano Ronaldo thanks Liverpool fans for tribute during Man Utd clash

CRISTIANO RONALDO posted a heartfelt thank you to Liverpool fans for their classy touch of support.

Manchester United and Liverpool supporters put their bitter rivalry aside on Tuesday night as they stood as one to applaud Ronaldo and his family.

On Monday, the Portuguese icon revealed the tragic death of his and Georgina Rodriguez's newborn son.

The forward wrote: "It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away.

"It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel.

"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

"Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

Understandably, he missed the match against the Reds.

But the players wore black armbands and both sets of fans unanimously clapped – before an emotional rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone rang out.

Ronaldo, 37, posted a clip of the tribute on Instagram this morning.

He wrote to his 430million followers: "One world… One sport… One global family… Thanks, Anfield.

"Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion."

Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro commented with a series of clapping and prayer emojis.

After thrashing United 4-0, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp described the seventh-minute show of support as the "moment of the game".

The German said: "It was a real show of class and of course, all our thoughts from the moment we heard about it were for Cristiano and his family and I can't even imagine how it must be.

"We really feel for him."

"My moment of the game was the seventh minute when the whole stadium showed pure class, so many things are much more important in life than football."

Ronaldo returned to the United training ground on Wednesday and was pictured sat in the back of a car driven by one of his security guards.

His team – who confirmed Erik ten Hag's appointment today – are next in action on Saturday when they travel to top four-chasing rivals Arsenal.

But it remains to be seen whether Ronaldo, the club's top scorer this season with 21, will be back to lead the line.
