Igor and Sam Waley-Cohen were in the mix two fences from home when disaster struck.

The pair were running in the Guildford Novices' Handicap Chase for trainer Nicky Henderson.

But it quickly went south as Waley-Cohen – a dentist and businessman who owns the horse – was put on the deck after his mount made a crunching error.

After a roll on the floor Waley-Cohen narrowly avoided a hoof in the teeth by the finest of margins and what surely would have been an awful injury.

Both the jockey and horse were reported to be fine after the incident. A lucky Sunday all round.

Sevarano went on the win the race from Mahlervous.

Watching punters were shocked by the horrific fall as racecourse medics rushed to check on the jockey.

One tweeted: "Jesus, glad to see Sam Waley Cohen is up on his feet after that. That looked nasty! Thank god for that!"

Another said: "Glad Sam Waley-Cohen's alright, that could have been really bad."
