Goshen to never race at Cheltenham Festival again after 'too bad to be true' nightmare run in Champion Hurdle

GOSHEN will never race at Cheltenham Festival again after his Champion Hurdle horror show.

The enigmatic Gary Moore-trained star was hellbent on redemption yesterday following his Triumph Hurdle blunder 12 months before.

Jamie Moore had the race at his mercy when unseated at the final flight that day in 2020.

Hopes were high for a redemption story after Goshen blew away rivals by 22 lengths on his warm-up run before the Festival.

And he was tempting in the market at around 11-2 before the off.

But Jamie had a nightmare trying to keep the five-year-old straight when he hung badly to the right all the way down the back straight.

He eventually finished eighth as the brilliant Honeysuckle stormed to victory on Rachael Blackmore.

Gary was at a loss to explain the bizarre run – but said it has put paid to Goshen running at the Festival again.

He told the Racing Post: "I've been to see him and he seems fine.

"He had a little cut in the side of his mouth which might explain a bit why he was going that way but that can't be the full story.

"I've never known him get warm before a race, but he got warm today. He hesitated about going into the paddock.

"It wasn't a fall last year exactly but he's run very disappointing here twice now, so I don't think he'll ever come back here again.

"It was too bad to be true. OK, he might not have beaten the winner, but if he'd finished in a punch-up with them then I'd have been a lot happier than I am."
