Germany has crashed out of the World Cup during group stages for the second year in a row – crushing fans hopes of glory and leaving exhausted players in tears on the pitch.

After failing to win either of their first two matches, Germany needed a victory over Costa Rica tonight and for Spain to beat Japan.

While they beat Costa Rica 4-2, Japan secured first place in Group E with a 2-1 victory over Spain, leaving Hansi Flick’s men in third place and Costa Rica at the bottom of the table.

The Germans hit the post three times during Thursday’s match in what will no doubt haunt the players as they’re sent packing this early in the tournament.

A potential early exit from the World Cup was earlier branded ‘a disaster times 10’ for the Germans – with some warning it could spell the end for Flick’s run as coach.

They last reached the last 16 at Euro 2020 but were beaten 2-0 by England.

The elimination will be well received by England fans after a long and well documented rivalry between the two sides.

It comes after world ranked number two, Belgium, was eliminated from the tournament earlier today.

In Group F, Morocco topped the table and progressed to the final 16 with Croatia after the shock elimination.
