    McLaren believes it has made the “next step” in the understanding of its upgrade package, after an encouraging showing so far at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

    McLaren is upbeat that its performance this weekend has shown the upgrade is working.

    Team boss Andreas Seidl said: “I'm happy that we could make a next step in terms of understanding this new nose box concept that we're using.”

    Valtteri Bottas has shared his frustration at his narrow defeat to Lewis Hamilton in qualifying was at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

    Despite leading through Friday and Saturday morning, Hamilton clinched pole position when it mattered.

    Speaking at parc ferme he said: “It is annoying, it’s really annoying.”

    Lewis Hamilton is expecting the unexpected in his first GP at Portimao.

    Hamilton came from behind to take his 97th pole position in qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix.

    But he's expecting things to be difficult when the race gets underway.

    He said: “I think it’s going to be a very tricky race, particularly as we’ve got the harder tyre. It doesn’t work for several laps. That’s going to be interesting at the beginning. We lose a bit of performance to Max and the guys behind on softs. I really don’t know what to expect tomorrow.”

    Just a tenth separated Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

    Hamilton starts from pole position tomorrow, the 97th of his career, speaking after qualifying Hamilton said: “I can't tell you how hard that was today!

    “I've just seen that Valtteri topped every session, and I've just been digging to find the time.

    “I chose to do three laps laps to have a chance to beat his time”

    Bottas has dominated all three sessions until now, Hamilton has that ability to pull it out of the bag at the last minute.

    Big spin for Ricciardo, but he is into the top 10 shootout.

    Stroll and Ocon are also in danger of not making it into Q3.

    The Brit, who faces an anxious wait to discover if he will drive for Williams next season, is in to Q2 with a final flying lap to knock out Kimi Raikkonen.

    So Latifi, Magnussen, Grosjean, Giovinazzi and Raikkonen are out.
