WE will enjoy 441 barbecues in our lifetime, according to a study by Baker Street bakery.
But firing up the grill can take a bite out of your monthly budget.
So when it comes to the little extras, here’s how to make some big savings . . .
ICE TIME: While a bag of ice is only £1 at Iceland, buying a few for every BBQ adds up. Fill resealable sandwich bags with water and stack flat in freezer drawers.
Take them out and break into shards to fill drinks coolers. Dunelm sells 25 sandwich bags for £1. Pick up the £11.99 GEEZY 35L folding camping picnic cooler basket from Amazon.co.uk, which you can fill and store food in if attending someone else’s BBQ.
DIP INTO YOUR RECIPE BOOK: Munching on veg and dips is a great way to keep everyone full while waiting for the meat to cook. But avoid pricey supermarket dips and make your own for less.

For example, Waitrose has a whipped feta dip for £2.50, when you could just crumble feta (85p for 200g, Lidl) into a food processor with some Greek yoghurt or oil.
Tesco sells sour cream and chive dip for £1.20 per 200g but own-brand sour cream is 95p per 300ml and chives are 70p. You can use the rest of the sour cream for a Mexican dinner this week.
DRINK UP: Looking for an easy clean-up? Disposable cups are still cheapest at Poundland, where 80 are £1. However, if you’re planning a few BBQs this summer, Wilko sells the more durable red plastic cups that can be re-used, £1.80 for ten cups — that’s 18p each.
MAKE YOUR OWN: It’s cheaper to make side dishes like potato salad yourself. Sainsbury’s ready-made potato salad is £1.55 for 600g, but 2.5kg of Aldi potatoes costs 99p and Aldi own-brand mayo is 65p.
