The picture was shared on the official Royal Family Instagram page to celebrate Mother’s Day. In the picture, Queen Elizabeth II looked “confident and inspired” by her mother.
The black and white picture showed a young Queen with her mother, who died in 2002.
The Queen Mother is wearing a formal hat, blazer and pearls with her arm around the Queen, who is a child at the time.
The mother and daughter are looking at each other, both smiling.
The caption read: “To all Mums everywhere, we wish you a very special Mother’s Day #MotheringSunday.”
The post was uploaded to celebrate Mother’s Day and the picture chosen could give a look into their mother and daughter relationship.
Body language expert Judi James stated it could also show the Queen was preparing for her future role as monarch.
She told Express.co.uk: “This photograph of the Queen and her mother that the palace chose to celebrate Mother’s Day seems to illustrate a very important facet of the parental role, i.e. to supply the child with all the skills and knowledge to enable them to move towards independence safely and confidently.”
When facing her mother, the Queen looks “inspired” ahead of her future royal role, Judi suggested.
“The Queen’s pose, with her arms hanging down by her sides and her shoulders squared as she faces what looks like her destiny, makes her look confident and inspired here,” the expert added.
“Her pose is symmetric and although her head is turned to the side to acknowledge her mother.
“It’s a pose that suggests she is growing into her future, with her own mother proudly ‘donating’ her to the country.”
The picture may have been taken when the Queen was a child, but it was already known she would grow to have an important royal role.
The Queen’s body language suggested “confidence” in the picture and her mother appeared to be “proud” of her daughter ahead of her key royal role.
Judi continued: “The Queen Mother has placed an arm around her daughter’s waist in a gesture of affection but it looks like a steering gesture, too.
“Her eye-gaze is on her daughter’s face here and her beaming smile and her eye-softening signals pride in her.”
The choice of picture seemed to be a nod to the close relationship Queen Elizabeth II had with her mother.
The expert claimed this could be relevant now to the Queen to know her family would be proud as she continues to reign.
Judi said: “This photograph and the body language signals might be as important to the Queen as the nation right now, perhaps more so.
“It shows strong bonds between the mother and daughter.
“But also a sense that the Queen would consider she would have always made her mother proud during her reign thanks to her ongoing sense of doing her duty first and foremost.”
