How often should you wash a muslin face cloth? Easy way to remove pesky foundation stains

Muslin cloths help you to remove your makeup while gently exfoliating and deeply cleansing your skin. They work for people of all ages and skin types and can be used multiple times a day to get rid of dirt, impurities and excess oils on top of reducing inflammation, increasing collagen production, and buffing away dead skin. But how often should you wash your muslin face cloth?

Soaking your skin with a warm muslin cloth is extremely relaxing and beneficial for your skin.

You can pair your muslin cloth with your favourite oil or balm cleansers and toners and let the cloth sit on your skin for a couple of minutes to really feel the effect of the steam.

Muslin cloths only work if they’re clean for every single-use, because what’s the point of rubbing old oil, makeup and dirt back onto your face every day?

How often should you wash your muslin face cloth?

Pai Skincare’s experts recommend changing the cloth as regularly as possible.

If you have acne-prone skin, you should definitely be using a fresh cloth daily.

All other skin types can get away with using a new cloth every other day, as long as you hang your cloth to dry between uses.

It makes sense to buy two or more muslin cloths and use them on rotation.

How do I wash it?

Every muslin cloth will be different and the packaging should come with instructions, but there is a general rule to follow.

Pai’s muslin cloths can be washed in the washing machine at 40 degrees with your whites, and so can most other muslin cloths.

However, it is important to use very gentle washing detergent such as one made for babies.

Whatever you do, don’t wash your muslin cloths in the machine with a fabric softener.

Fabric softener can get lodged between the fibres and make the cloth extra rough.

The stuck fabric softener will also encourage bacteria to grow on the cloth, rendering your cleansing process totally useful or even harmful.

If you want something a little stronger to clean your cloth, you can use white vinegar and baking soda.

Pai’s experts recommend soaking the cloth in hot water with a teaspoon of white wine vinegar and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.

This will keep your cloths extra fresh and help to keep them soft enough to exfoliate gently without harming your skin.

The baking soda is ideal for white muslin cloths because it will brighten up the colour and remove makeup stains from the cloth.
