As any busy parent knows, it can be difficult to get yourself out the door with children running around your feet.

But Kate Middleton, 37, appeared to have help on hand as she got ready for the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace last night.

Her mother Carole Middleton, 64, was spotted leaving Kensington Palace as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed out for the glittering soiree.

Known for being a hands-on grandmother, it is thought Carole might have been there to help look after Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one, while her daughter was dressed in her white tie finery.

It comes just a few weeks after Kate pulled out of attending the Tusk Conservation Awards at the last minute ‘because of the children’. It was widely reported that the reason was to do with childcare.

It is unprecedented for a member of the royal family to cancel because of childcare issues, but it was perhaps inevitable, given that William and Kate have chosen to hire just one nanny, Maria Borrallo, to help look after their children.

The rest of the time the couple take on the responsibility themselves or rely on the support of family, including doting grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton.

Carole looked typically polished in a camel coat and delicate drop earrings as she left Kensington Palace at around 7.45pm.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the gates of Buckingham Palace just a short while afterwards.

While the timing means Mrs Middleton didn’t stay to look after her grandchildren for the whole night, it is possible she helped keep them occupied or put them to bed.
