Former Liverpool star John Barnes returned to take on contestant  Dr Ranj Singh in the sixth episode and semi-final of ITV’s new ‘Britain’s Brightest Celebrity Family’ tonight.

Both previously beat their competitors to make it through to the second stage, and kicking off the show was Barnes, 56,  who battled it out with Ranj, 40, who regularly appears on ITV’s This Morning and has starred on Strictly.

In the show, which aired at 8pm this evening, Barnes appeared alongside his daughter Gemma, and her partner George, both junior doctors.

They took on Dr Ranj, along with his brother Min, who works in finance, and his cousin Harry, a dentist, in the second last episode of this season’s game show presented by Anne Hegerty.

The celebrity version of the quiz sees five rounds complete with 10 questions each, the Quickfire round, the Specialist round, an Observation section, a new Identify segment – where they are challenged to match tiles into their correct category – and the Final round.

Speaking about what he had learned about playing the game before, John joked: ‘To delegate’, before admitting: ‘I’m feeling a bit intimated though because while I have two junior doctors on the team, we’re up against a real doctor!’.

Meanwhile Dr Ranj’s cousin Harry added: ‘Sorry guys he’s promised me a Liverpool season ticket if we let him win!’.

Despite Dr Ranj scooping a last minute 10 points on the final question just after the bell rang, the Barnes family won by another 10 points, beating the Singh family with 240 to 230 points.

‘Here’s your season ticket’, John joked as they celebrated being sent through to the final with the chance to win the title, and £25,000 for their charity of choice.
