A New Study Shows If You Eat Less Meat, You’ll Probably Live Longer

As more and more people turn to vegetarian and veganism, the reasons to cut down on meat consumption continue to pile up.

There are a number of ways in which we can try to help what is effectively a dying planet. Sadly, humans are the ones who have done that damage, so it’s only right that we try to fix it. We are currently doing that by attempting to eradicate the use of fossil fuels, cutting down on how much plastic we use, and adapting our diets.

That last one is a biggie, and we are seeing it more and more everywhere we go. People are not only opting to be vegetarians and pescatarians but going all the way and turning to veganism and plant-based diets. That greatly aids the planet due to the amount of damage to meat and dairy farming does to it. Plus, a vegan lifestyle is obviously incredibly healthy to boot.

In fact, a new study has revealed that cutting down on your meat intake is better for you in more ways than you might realize. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, discovered that men who eat a meat-rich diet are around 23% more likely to die prematurely.

The Finnish scientists in charge of the study gathered data on 2641 men aged between 42 and 60 for a staggering 22 years. During that time, almost half of the men involved in the study passed away. The findings revealed that when compared to men who ate less than 2.6 ounces of meat a day, men who ate more than half a pound of meat per day were 23% more likely to pass away at a younger age.

The research didn’t only analyze the volume of meat eaten by the men. Scientists also looked at the ratio of meat protein to plant protein. As you might have guessed, those who favored meat protein when it comes to that balance were also more likely to die prematurely. So, if you were looking for that one last reason to change up your lifestyle and decrease your meat intake, perhaps this is it.
