5 of the best new affordable perfumes for spring 2022 – all £20 or less

There’s nothing quite like treating yourself to a new perfume – or even better, getting someone else to treat you to one.

But fragrances are notoriously expensive, which is why they’re often added to birthday wish lists or seen as something to occasionally splurge on. However, this new batch of spring scents proves that you don’t need to spend a fortune on your favourite fragrance.

I’ve been hunting down the best new affordable scents that certainly don’t smell cheap. Read on to find your new signature scent that won’t break the bank…

Best new bargain perfumes for spring 2022

M&S Discover Intense Mandarin & Ylang Ylang EDT, £6 here

Marks & Spencer has created some excellent budget scents recently, especially at the lighter end of the scale. Own-brand offerings such as Water Jasmine (£6) and Provenance Amongst The Olive Groves (£7.50) have a fresh feel that reminds me a little of Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria line.

Now, M&S is diving deeper with Discover Intense, a range of richer scents designed to linger longer on the skin. Try Mandarin & Ylang Ylang, or the £5 discovery kit with all six scents.

Scentology Pomelo & Neroli EDP, £9.99 here

This chic new range wouldn’t look out of place among perfumes 10 times the price on your dressing table.

There are five scents to try, and as someone who’s had many holiday romances with beachy perfumes like Nuxe Prodigieux and Estée Lauder’s Bronze Goddess I’m drawn to the creamy, coconutty elements of Vanilla Latte & Velvet Woods. I also love Pomelo & Neroli, which is a juicy fruit crush at the top, followed by a flutter of sunshine petals and a soft, musky base.

Yardley Magnolia and Fig EDT, £10.66 here

A few years back, Yardley (now aged 252!) embarked on a bold image update and decided to modernise all its heritage fragrances, even its classic lavender. It’s paid off, paving the way for new contemporary blends like this new green floral. Expect soft sweetness from the fig and romance from the magnolia, plus blackcurrant berries and a dash of patchouli.

The Body Shop Rebel Rosebud EDT, £20 here

Rose scents are definitely enjoying a moment, and this new-season bloom from The Body Shop is well worth plucking from the shelf.

With an 87% natural formula and 42% recycled bottle, it’s a distinctly modern rose, rounded out with notes of amber and saffron. Extra perfume geek points if you recognise it is a refresh of The Body Shop’s Red Fixation scent. It’s actually part of five faves reimagined as a collection of “mood” perfumes, including Wild Jasmine and Vibrant Bergamot.

Zara Twilight Mauve EDT, £12.99 here

The fashion chain takes its in-house fragrance seriously, recently teaming up with perfume legend Jo Malone CBE to create a Vibrant Cities collection.

This season it’s updating its own-brand offering with six stylish bottles in the Zara Summer collection. If you like a not-too-sweet fruity floral, try Twilight Mauve which combines apple and blackcurrant with subtly powdery floral notes and clean woody base notes.
