Kate, Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 40th birthday on January 9, and royal fans were treated to not one, but three new images of the Duchess to mark the occasion. The photos were taken by Paolo Roversi to mark Kate’s milestone birthday. And Kate certainly pulled out all the stops, wearing more than £400,000 worth of jewellery that once belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Kate wore three dresses from renowned British designer, Alexander McQueen, which she accessorised with jewellery from both the Queen and the late Princess Diana’s jewellery collections.

In the portrait where Kate wore a fire-engine red dress, she was also wearing a pair of earrings loaned to her by the Queen.

And in other snaps, Kate’s pearl earrings and sapphire engagement ring from Princess Diana’s collection can be seen in full view.

Kate’s engagement ring famously belonged to Diana, and it is perhaps the most iconic jewellery item Diana owned.

Kate’s dazzling sapphire and diamond engagement ring has an estimated value of £390,000.

Steven Stone diamond expert Maxwell Stone said: “Kate Middleton’s ring, which was formerly Princess Diana’s, features a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire, originating from Sri Lanka.

“Like with most precious gemstones, the quality and value of a sapphire is graded by its colour and hue, which can range from a light, pale blue to a dark, royal blue.

“The sapphire is a deep, royal blue, of AAAA quality, making it amongst the most valuable of its kind.

“Globally, the sale of blue sapphires increased by around 300 percent at the time, and even now, thanks to Netflix show The Crown, sales of sapphires continue to surge, with vintage style halo designs being extremely popular.”

In her portraits, Kate also wore a pair of earrings, the Collingwood diamond and pearl set, which has an estimated value of £30,000 to £35,000.

Diana frequently wore the Collingwood diamond and pearl earrings, and they have since become a firm favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge.

The earrings were proudly on display in Kate’s birthday portraits this year.

Mr Stone said: “These sensational drop-pearl-and-diamond earrings are known to be a wedding gift from the London jeweller, Collingwood, when Princess Diana married Prince Charles.

“They were worn by Princess Diana on numerous occasions, both casual and formal.

“Kate Middleton inherited the earrings and also wore them to honour her late mother-in-law at the Queen’s annual garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2019.

“While pearls can vary in price, the ones featured in these earrings are of the highest quality, as they are South Sea pearls. Earrings like this would cost between £30,000 to £35,000 today.”

Princess Diana often accessorised her earrings with the Queen’s Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara at formal royal engagements.

And in recent years Kate has also followed suit, with the Lover’s Knot Tiara thought to be a firm favourite of the Duchess for banquets and balls.

The earrings perfectly complement the pearls that make up the dazzling diadem.

Diana also notably wore the earrings on the night she attended a dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994, and she paired them with a sapphire choker.
