Most popular baby names worldwide revealed – and Olivia and Oliver don’t get a look in

WITH a baby boom expected in 2021, the most popular baby names around the globe have been revealed to indicate what the next generation may be called.

It seems traditional names are a firm favourite – but the UK’s most common monikers Olivia and Oliver don’t get a look in.

OnBuy.com surveyed 4,978 parents and parents-to-be and trawled through thousands of monikers to find the top 100 European baby names around the world. 

The most popular European girls name in the world is Maria, which is the name of 61,147,219 babies. 

Meanwhile José is the most popular traditional European boys name, with approximately 29,940,365 boys sharing this moniker. 

In fact, Maria ranks as the second most common baby name worldwide, while José is sixth – and both are most popular in Brazil. 

For girls' names, Ana and Rosa were also among the top three choices, followed by Elizabeth, perhaps inspired by the Queen.

There was another royal influence in the list, with Kate Middleton's full name, Catherine, ranking at number 20.

Catherine is originally from Greece, but the study suggests that it is now most popular in France.

After José, John takes second place with approximately 14,323,843 baby boys having this name, making it the 15th most popular in the world. 

John is an English name taken from the Hebrew word Yohanan meaning “gracious” and is most common in the United States.

Third place went to Juan, with 11,371,254 babies having the name, making it the 20th most common worldwide.

Juan is a traditional Spanish boy’s name which is most found now in Mexico. 

This follows Oliver and Olivia being revealed once again as the most popular baby names for boys and girls in England and Wales, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

And these are the top nine most-hated baby names chosen by grandparents, including Aurora & Charlotte.
