Waitrose has hauled jars of beetroot from its shelves amid fears they could contain shards of broken glass.

The supermarket has recalled 340g jars of Essential Waitrose Pickled Sweet Sliced Beetroot with a best before date of September 2020.

Waitrose said it recalled the range as a precaution after receiving a few reports from customers.

A spokesman for the Food Standards Agency said: ‘It may be unsafe to eat and customers are being advised to return the product as soon as possible’.

The supermarket has recalled Essential Waitrose Pickled Sweet Sliced Beetroot, say the Food Standards Agency

‘This product may contain small pieces of glass, which presents a safety risk.

‘Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product.

‘These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

‘If you have bought any of the above product, do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.’

A notice with information about the recall has been posted on the Food Standards Agency website. 

A spokesman for Waitrose said: ‘As a precautionary measure, we are recalling jars of essential Waitrose beetroot with a best before date of September 2020 after a small number of jars were found to contain glass fragments. We are currently investigating how this happened. We have notified the FSA and have alerted our customers, who can return the products for a full refund.’ 

The 340g jars of the betroot with a best before date of September 2020 are the ones affected
